Below, check out some notices we’ve recently received from Upper West Siders, including public school students whose tennis court and equipment were severely damaged in Hurricane Sandy.

We are also creating a special page where these needs will be listed. That page is now located here, but will eventually a link will be placed in the sidebar on the right side of the page. To submit a notice for consideration, please send an email to info@westsiderag.com.

    Sports Equipment Needed
Via Gale Brewer: Brandeis High School needs sports equipment, partly because in the storm the outdoor tennis equipment was severely damaged. The outdoor shed was completely destroyed.  The entire ceiling has caved in and has fallen on the tennis posts and nets.  Nothing can really be removed without incurring the risk of getting seriously hurt.  There is a lot of mildew and rust. The Tennis Season begins on March 1 and the first PSAL League Game is on March 18.  Brandeis has 3 tennis courts that need to be replaced with tennis posts and nets.  The Athletic Program does not have the funds for replacement.  And over the summer the main gym was under construction and equipment was stolen because a closet was left open when a lock was drilled out. (Don’t get me started…GAB)

    Needed:
    1. Tennis Balls & Tennis Rackets, and tennis nets and posts
    2. Baseballs
    3. Bats
    3. Volleyballs
    4. Soccer Balls
    5. Basketballs

    Homes for Cats
Frankie’s Fund for Feline Care and Rescue is a local 501(c)3 non profit organization that rehomes older and special needs cats through foster care and adoption.  The cats are 7 years and older and have all been thoroughly vetted,  Please consider bringing one of these great cats into your home.  For more information call Bunny at 917-514-0228 or check out our website Frankiesfelinefund.org.  For Valentine’s Day we are selling wonderfully fragrant soy candles and See’s candy, lollipops and single candy bars.  Can be bought at NY Cat Hospital, corner of W66th and Freedom Place or we can deliver.
Honoring Upper West Sider Dick Threlkeld
Since Dick left us last year, we have been looking for a way to honor his memory.  With the blessing of Betsy and his daughters, we would like to endow an Overseas Press Club prize in Dick’s honor.  Dick won six (!) OPC awards, so we believe this is an appropriate way to commemorate Dick’s remarkable career.

Once we raise the money, the OPC’s Cornelius Ryan Award for the best non-fiction book on international affairs will be “sponsored by the friends of Richard Threlkeld.”

This is where all of you come in.  We need $1,000 immediately for the prize fund, and another $250 ticket for an awards dinner ticket for Betsy.  In the long run, we would like to raise $20,000 to endow the prize in perpetuity. We invite you to join in our fundraising effort by making a contribution, large or small, to support the endowment of this prize in Dick’s honor.

Please make out a check to the Overseas Press Club and send it to:
