Upper West Siders have quite a few ways to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Attend a rally for gun control downtown… One Million Moms for Gun-Control NYC area Chapters Host MLK Day Rally at 10:30 am at City Hall Park, Fountain Plaza, Broadway and Park Row (March from Brooklyn starts at 9:15am at Cadman Plaza) email jakesmom@nyc.rr.com for more info.

Hear a free concert at Symphony Space… At 6:30pm (Doors open at 6pm) at Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street. Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the JCC. No advance registration; seating is limited. Each year the JCC presents the powerful work of artists whose vision elevate King’s voice for justice, peace and civil rights. PERFORMERS Catherine Russell & Her Band Civil Rights in Song and Spirit Grammy Award winning vocalist Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker, and a graduate of American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Ms. Russell has toured the world, performing and recording with David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, and Rosanne Cash. Anthony Russell, Anthony Coleman, Michael Winograd: Convergence Hebrew, Yiddish, Yemenite, and African-American songs in a Contemporary Jazz Setting. https://www.jccmanhattan.org

Watch the presidential inauguration at the David Rubenstein Atrium on 63rd… Mark a moment in history with your neighbors and Council Member Gale A. Brewer on Monday, January 21, 2013 when President Obama takes the oath of office for a second time. The David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center will screen the 57th inaugural ceremonies on the 40-foot Media Wall. 11:00AM – 2:00PM at the David Rubenstein Atrium. Broadway between 62nd and 63rd Streets, NY NY. Free…And when you watch the Inauguration, you will hear a tape of Kaufman Music Center’s (West 67 Street) very own Special Music School Elementary Chorus, who will be performing the song “We Have the Power” by Sean Hartley and Jihwan Kim. (The Special Music School is a NYC public school in the Kaufman Center KaufmanMusicCenter.org).

Check out a jazz concert for $25 cover ($10 for students)… With the Marc Cary Focus Trio at the Jazz Society for Lincoln Center. 7:30 and 9:30.
