SCENES FROM CENTRAL PARK’S REOPENING: MARATHONERS RUN ANYWAY, DESTRUCTION, AND LEVITY

The marathon may have been called off, but the folks who came here to run in it are clearly still in the mood to stretch their legs. The park was packed on Saturday and Sunday, with runners passing between the flags that had been set up for the big race. On Sunday, many competed in the “Run Anyway Marathon” around the park while others went to Staten Island to volunteer. The photo below is by Harriet Flehinger, and was taken on Sunday:

Others toured the destruction, with Philip Bump taking the photo below near 100th Street.

The Marathon finish line was still up.

    The Adventure Playground remained closed.

And comedian Ricky Gervais found a bird camped out in a stoplight:

Central Park is open for the first time after Sandy. This little guy is assessing the damage to his home… pic.twitter.com/udrbHX7h

Thanks to Malcolm Carter, Harriet Flehinger and Philip Bump for the photos. We will keep adding to this gallery so send us pictures.
