August 2, 2012 Weather: Partly Cloudy, High of 86 Degrees.

Notices:
“Notification issued 8/2/12 at 8:00 AM. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for New York City from 11:00 AM until 11:00 PM tonight. For more information please visit: https://1.usa.gov/NNxJS.”

Local events today include a free fitness class in Central Park, and free concerts and plays.

News:
A 54-year-old man was bitten by two unleashed dogs while bicycling in Central Park around 86th and Central Park West on FRiday. The dog owner was arrested for lack of licenses and vaccinations, and for letting them off the leash. She apparently didn’t believe her pups were capable of doing harm: “She said, ‘My dogs don’t bite,’” victim Enzo Ricciardi recalled. “I said, ‘Look at my legs. They don’t bite?’” (Daily News)

The manager of Sugar & Plumm Purveyors of Yumm, the controversial new candy shop set to open soon on 78th and Amsterdam, says the new store isn’t all about candy. This after an anonymous vandal posted stickers on the windows warning neighbors about Childhood Obesity and other ills. “The bistro portion of the location will serve salads, burgers and salmon among other non-sugary foods.” (Fox NY)

Bike rental companies around Central Park worry that bike-sharing service Citibike will put them out of business. (NY Press)

Some homebuyers are choosing to rent apartments in buildings where they’re considering buying. That’s what a guy named CNN anchor Dr. Sanjay Gupta did at the Aldyn on Riverside Boulevard. (WSJ)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
