July 12, 2012 Weather: Partly Cloudy, High of 83 Degrees.

Notices:
7-Eleven is giving away free Slurpees today from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. The Upper West Side locations are at 93rd and Amsterdam and 89th and Columbus (and soon to be at 96th and Broadway).

We’ve updated the calendar to include Wednesday’s events. Remember, Manhattanhenge hits the Upper West Side tonight, so send us your pictures!

News:
The New York Times adds to the story we broke last week about Chinese restaurant RedFarm moving into a space at the corner of 77th Street and Broadway. Apparently it will be taking over the space currently inhabited by Malaysian restaurant Fatty Crab. Will Fatty Crab be moving, or closing for good? They never got back to us. (NY Times) Update: Eater says Fatty Crab is looking for a new space on the Upper West Side.

Starting in September, 78th Street will be closed between Amsterdam and Columbus from 11 a.m. until 3 on school days so students at PS 87 can play while their playground is reconstructed. Community Board 7 approved the plan this week. Neighbors had objected, saying they’d be hemmed in during those times. It could take more than a year to build the playground. (DNAinfo)

Community Board 7 approved plans to extend curbs around Collegiate and Ascension, 2 private schools, and Booker T. Washington, a public middle school. But the board was upset at the city Transportation Department for not consulting the board beforehand so the board could understand why those schools were chosen and suggest other schools. (DNAinfo)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
