A baby Blue Jay at the new Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on Columbus Avenue and 88th Street, by Jodi Kendall.

June 5, 2012 Weather: Afternoon Showers, High of 66 Degrees.

Notices:
As a result of a campaign from earlier this year, Everyblock donated $10,000 to schools through donorschoose.org, and they tell us that Upper West Side schools were some of the biggest recipients.

News:
Seventy-two-year-old Otto Kogen was leaving an apartment he owns on West 105th last year when he said he was slammed against a car by three police officers for a stop-and-frisk. When Kogen, who thought he was being robbed, threatened to call the police, one of the officers said “Fuck you, Russian — we are the police!” according to Kogen. Police reports said Kogen appeared to be intoxicated and that the officers identified themselves, but Kogen disputes that. Kogen spent the next two days in the hospital with chest pains. Now he’s suing for $5 million. (Daily News)

Although 550,000 people live within a 10-minute walk of Central Park, which has a huge effect on their property values, only about 17% contribute to the Central Park Conservancy, which pays 85% of the park’s costs. A recent report found that homes along the park are worth more than double those in surrounding areas. (Crain’s)

Police have yet to charge anyone in the death of 95-year-old Peter Lisi at Williams Memorial Residence on West 95th Street. Lisi was found in his room at the senior center strangled and beaten in December. Residents there are frightened that not enough has been done to ensure their safety. (DNAinfo)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
