SPINAL TAP ACTOR INJURED IN NASTY 86TH STREET CRASH

Michael McKean, an actor who has been in Christopher Guest mock-documentaries like Spinal Tap and Best in Show was involved in a serious wreck on 86th Street and Broadway on Tuesday afternoon.

McKean’s manager told DNAinfo and the Daily News that the actor broke his leg and had all sorts of lacerations and other injuries. He was scheduled to perform in Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man” on Tuesday night but had to miss the performance. It was the first time in his career he’s missed a performance, his manager said.

The crash occurred when one car heading south made a left turn and collided with a northbound car, sending the southbound car hurtling onto the sidewalk. In all, four people were injured in the wreck, the FDNY told us. One pedestrian (apparently McKean) was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital with serious injuries. The other three people were in the cars and sustained neck and back injuries, the NYPD said. No one was charged in the crash. The Daily News has more photos from the scene.

D.B. Smallman, a local lawyer, saw the accident and took the picture below:

That’s awful. It seems to be a pretty dangerous intersection, with cars always trying to beat the light and speeding through.

1. Separate traffic enforcement (plus extra hires, will pay for itself)
2. 20 mph, Manhattan-wide
3. On Broadway: No left turn on green (only halfway through the median)
4. All bikes off the sidewalks (and the right way on a one-way)and on designated route through the parks only.

Wow, this is the first description of the crash that makes sense to me. I had thought it happened on Columbus, not Broadway. Either way, they are both horribly dangerous intersections for pedestrians. Many school children are traveling this intersection, right at the time of this crash. Yuck. Agree with your reader on the 20MPH speed limit!!
