February 8, 2012 Weather: Possible snow showers, High of 38 Degrees.

News:
An Upper West Side mom’s encounter with a creep who was watching the mother change her daughter convinced her to use a facebook app that lists New York’s sex offenders. “Upper West Side moms often have a bit of a false sense of comfort when thinking about our neighborhood in general,” she says. (Lollitot)

The Columbus Avenue Business Improvement District explains why it doesn’t support the plan to rezone commercial space on the Upper West Side to keep storefronts small and presumably help small businesses. It creates “a profound threat of unanticipated consequences,” says Executive Director Barbara Adler. (I just checked their website and noticed that a lot of the people on the BID’s board, including the executive chairman, are big real estate players.) (The Real Deal)

The local community board voted in favor of a resolution that could make a controversial nursing home proposed for 97th Street seek a more complicated approval process. (Columbia Spectator)

Tyson Chandler, one of the newest members of the New York Knicks, is renting a five-bedroom apartment at The Rushmore on Riverside Boulevard for $32,500 per month. I would have let him crash on my couch for $20,000. (Curbed)

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
