The Gap on the corner of 86th Street and Broadway is two weeks away from closing for good, creating another big vacancy on a prominent corner in the neighborhood. The Gap corporation said last year that it will be closing 189 stores, and the 86th Street was one of the stores that got the axe. The store’s final day will be January 23, an employee there told me. No word yet on what’s moving in.
The last Gap remaining in the neighborhood is on Broadway and 67th Street. Unlike the Filene’s Basement that just closed on 79th Street, there won’t be a liquidation sale. Speaking of Filene’s, it’s a little haunting to walk by that big empty store, now, isn’t it?
