Rumormongering is slightly irresponsible, but when the rumor’s from a good source we’re all ears. Last month, Jeffrey Roseman, VP at retail firm Newmark Knight Frank, tweeted “H&M going to Time Warner Center is what the sources are saying. 2 level store taking portion of Borders and Samsung.” Shopping and style blog Racked saw the tweet and wrote about it yesterday.
H&M is a Swedish retailer that designs its own clothes (as opposed to Century 21, where most of the clothes are from other brands).
Borders closed for good in September after a liquidation sale when the corporation went bankrupt. The store was in a sweet spot for a retailer — the center of the second floor of the Time Warner Center mall.
So, first Barnes & Noble on 66th Street closes and becomes Century 21. And now Borders could become H&M? Clearly, we are getting a little dumber but also a little more fashionable. Hey, there are worse things than being dumb and pretty.
We’ve reached out to H&M and Roseman for an update.
For those of you who love shopping, Roseman also wrote this yesterday: “The retail markets to watch this year will be West Chelsea, Columbus Circle and the return of the upper east & west sides…”
Indeed, there are plenty of new stores, including a Brooks Brothers, scheduled to open this year in the neighborhood. Check out our recent interactive map of 25 local openings and closings.
