Aren’t liquidators great? In case you didn’t get the MESSAGE, Borders in the Time Warner Center is closing down, and everything is being sold at a ridiculous discount. Unfortunately, there aren’t a ton of extremely desirable products left. Sure, there are lots of copies of “They Call Me Baba Booey,” the touching story of the goofy Howard Stern sidekick, and dozens of wall calendars (who shops for calendars in the summer?), but almost every DVD (below) has been cleared out, and the kids’ section is pretty bare.
Update: The store’s last day is September 14.
That said, it can’t hurt to stop in. Most of the merchandise is selling at 60% discounts and more, with lots of books you’ll never read selling for 80% off. None of the employees know when this jamboree will end, and unfortunately many of them still haven’t found other jobs. The store could be open for another couple of weeks as the last of the inventory gets sold off, one told me. By then, they will probably be paying you to remove that Baba Booey memoir from the shelves.
In any case, there’s something special about an event that turns a high-end mall into a garish garage sale. I could explain how it’s a metaphor for our times, but I’m not that good a writer. Check out some of the exciting items below that don’t seem to be flying off the shelves.
