SWANKY UPPER WEST SIDE ROOFTOP BAR CHARGES 40% GRATUITY: CHUTZPAH OR A MISTAKE?

The standard tip at a New York bar has clearly been on the upswing in recent years, but one customer at the Empire Hotel rooftop bar recently got charged an automatic tip that nearly blew his mojito off.

An unidentified tipster sent a receipt into the blog Eater this week after being charged a whopping 40% on his drink orders. The itemized receipt shows that the waitress rang up a 20% gratuity twice. She helpfully crossed out the “tip” line on the receipt so that the customer didn’t feel inclined to give even more. The customer didn’t even look at the receipt, just signed on the bottom line.

Are we living in a brave new world of tipping, or did someone just hit hitting a button twice on a computer?

We have a call into Empire, but haven’t heard back.
