A man fell onto the train tracks at the 66th Street subway station this morning, and was trapped there for half an hour as rescue crews extricated him. The man, who news agencies said was “disheveled” and possibly homeless, survived the fall with injuries to his head and pelvis.

The man had been lying down on some seats on the 1 train a little after 9 a.m. when another passenger got on and said “I pay my taxes so I can take the subway to work,” DNAinfo reported. The two yelled at each other and then the homeless man got off at 66th and challenged his adversary to a fight on the platform. When the other man didn’t leave the car, the homeless man began banging the windows of  the train, the Post reported. Somehow, he fell in between cars and onto the tracks. Passengers screamed for the train to stop. Midwin Charles said via twitter that “The look on folks faces is something I will never forget; just panic and fear.”

The 1 train was diverted for about an hour.

For detailed reporting on the gruesome incident, check out DNAinfo.
