News:
Congregation Shaare Zedek, a synagogue on West 93rd Street, is being accused of failing to maintain its Queens cemetery. People whose relatives have plots there say they don’t know where the money they pay for upkeep is going. A couple of months ago, ABC revealed that the cemetery was in a shambles, with crypts left open and in at least one case skeletal remains exposed. (ABC News)
Texas governor and presidential candidate Rick Perry attended a fundraiser on Central Park West last night. One might think the neighborhood would be hostile territory for the gun-loving, tax-hating politician, but the event was supposedly “swamped”. He may have raised as much as $250k. (Capital New York)
Speaking of swamped… A huge water main break on 106th Street and Central Park West yesterday morning put the A,B,C, and D lines out of service until 5 a.m. this morning, when the MTA was able to fully clean out the tunnels and get the trains back up and running. The water was as deep as 10 feet in some places, according to the MTA. Hats off to the MTA workers who stayed up all night to get it done.
The Folk Art Museum’s trustees are considering ways to dispose of the museum’s collection and dissolve the institution, shutting down the Lincoln Square location. New York Times critic Roberta Smith hopes that doesn’t happen. (NY Times)
