I was worried for awhile there that all the gay marriage fun might be happening in other parts of the city, particularly the West Village and Brooklyn. But it looks like the celebration will be coming uptown too, as a group of young New Yorkers is planning to create a free pop-up chapel at Merchant’s Gate in Central Park near Columbus Circle (the initial plan for Bethesda Fountain weddings was nixed), where they will marry as many gay couples as want to tie the knot on July 30, the first full weekend gay marriage will be legal.
Bex Schwartz, (actually a college friend of mine, though I didn’t know she was behind this when I started writing it), was so pumped about the same-sex marriage law getting passed that she decided to conduct free weddings in the park with a free photographer, free cupcakes, and a free minister (her). To sign up or learn more, go to the pop-up chapel website. And if you see any other gay wedding-related new in the neighborhood, let me know!
