By Gus Saltonstall

A pair of chickens were sadly found dead in the middle of an Upper West Side street on Tuesday morning.

The two chickens were spotted along a street median at West 92nd Street.

The circumstances of what led up to the sad discovery are unclear as of Tuesday afternoon.

It leaves the unfortunate question.

Why did the chickens cross the road?

Speaking of chickens, a few months ago I saw a guy walking on 72n.d and Broadway with a live chicken tucked under his arm. It was a pretty chicken, and girls were ooohing and aaaahing. He said it was his pet. I can only imagine how many women this guy was able to meet with this tactic. Helps that he was nice looking, too :).

Were the chickens kosher? There are a few kosher restaurants and supermarkets between 91 street and 95th street

No the chickens were not circumcised so I assume they were not kosher.

why is it okay to be punny/cutesy about animals whose lives were ended (probably) by human hands? I like the reporting of the story, but there is no need to add the coda. Two chickens were killed and left dead in the road. End of story.

There is nothing wrong with making light of a sad situation.

Q: How did the chickens cross the road?
A: They didn’t.

I know — bad joke. Sorry, but couldn’t resist.

There have been dead chickens or remains of chickens w/ feathers still on around the UWS for years. There used to be regular reports of their being found in Riverside Park.

A relative once paid money to people who had him buy a live chicken, spit into its mouth until he could spit no more, and then I don’t know what they did … he did not disclose all the details. The purpose was, they told him, to get rid of a curse. They also had him bring in money in bills, which, he thinks, they burned. I assume they switched the cash for some other paper …

A couple of years ago, I was hanging out in Central Park near W 93rd St. On my way out, I noticed there were 3 dead chickens, just like these, nestled at the base of the tree behind me. Someone also told me it might be a superstition thing. It was certainly memorable, and this article immediately caught my eye since I’d never heard of this happening before!

That double chicken-cide is not far from Chick Chick. Coincidence? I think not!

The last time I seen (white) chicken on the side of the road was on the highway on route 95 going north that flew out of a trailer truck going to a chicken slaughterhouse last summer… Now I wonder why would (white) chickens be on the side of a city road in “Manhattan” on West 92nd St. ? ….We don’t have slaughter houses here in Manhattan…..or do we up town in the Bronx at Hunt’s point??
Why would a chicken trailer truck be coming through Manhattan and where is it coming from?
