NEW LOCAL GROUP FIGHTS CLIMATE CHANGE

There aren’t any coal plants on the Upper West Side (as far as we know), but we still contribute to global warming. A group called Carbon Squeeze has just formed to figure out ways to reduce our carbon footprint and it’s holding its first event next week.

“We recognize that the concept of taking steps to reduce one’s carbon footprint can be quite daunting,” said Upper West Sider Lisa Sladkus in a statement about the group. “The idea behind The Carbon Squeeze was to provide straight-forward information about climate change, as well as present tangible steps that anyone can take to help combat this warming. Our hope is that all participants will leave our events feeling empowered to make necessary changes in their own lives.”

The first step in that process starts on Monday, when the group holds a free event at the JCC on Amsterdam and 76th at 7 p.m. It will feature a talk by environmentalist Paul Reale from The Climate Reality Project.

“Paul will provide a powerful account (with jaw-dropping images) of how climate changes are affecting our planet and ways we can act NOW to stem the damage!” the group says.

If you’re interested, RSVP to carbonsqueeze@gmail.com with your name and zip.

Among the group members are Reale, Sladkus, Elizabeth Starkey (Co-Chair of Community Board 7’s Parks and Environment Committee, and Mel Wymore (CB7 member and candidate for City Council).

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
