Clearly many of you haven’t done your holiday shopping, and Christmas and Hannukah both arrive in the next week. Luckily there are lots of crafts fairs in the neighborhood this weekend that will let you buy something homemade and make you look very thoughtful to your friends and relatives. Check out the fairs at West-Park Church on 86th Street, Columbus Circle and at GreenFlea on 77th Street and Columbus. Our quirky holiday gift guide might also give you some ideas for local gifts.
If you have done your shopping, or prefer to wait until the absolute last minute, there are still lots of events on our neighborhood calendar to keep you occupied. I would also recommend checking out some of the amazing shows going on throughout the city (I know, it’s sacrilege to urge people to leave the neighborhood). The new Islamic wing at The Met is definitely worth seeing, as is Diego Rivera at MoMA, and the Radical Camera show at the Jewish Museum of photos by a group of idealistic photographers who attempted to document New York but were eventually blacklisted. It might be nice to be inside too, because the high temperature on Sunday will be 35 degrees.
An artist named Avi Gitler also told me about his new pop-up art gallery called “Pop-Up Pop-In” on the West side of 57th Street and Broadway. It will be open from noon until 7 p.m. from now until Jan. 1. “The price is free, which is slightly lower than at MOMA, though I admit our scope is slightly less ambitious. Still, if people wanna see some works by international artists whose work is not on display in other galleries in NYC, send them over. I will do my best to entertain them.”
Check traffic info at traffic.com for delays. As for the subway, the MTA has a map detailing all of the weekend changes, but it looks like there are virtually no service disruptions scheduled this weekend on local lines.
