Street Sign in Central Park Honors Heroic Detective Steven McDonald

The city honored NYPD Detective Steven McDonald on Wednesday with a street sign on the 86th Street transverse. McDonald died in January, 31 years after he was shot by a teenager while on duty in Central Park, an attack that left him paralyzed.

McDonald’s response to that attack was an inspiration to many people: he forgave the shooter and spoke around the world about the importance of forgiveness.

Steve McDonald was a hero for so many reasons and it is a great idea to name this street after him.

I was just a kid when he was shot but I remember hearing about it. Back then NYC – and much of the UWS – was a scary and dangerous and crime-ridden place.

It’s amazing how so many people on this site still think the 1980s and early 1990s were the good old days for NYC.
