May 25, 2011 Weather: Sunny! High of 82 degrees.

    Notices:
West Side Rag columnist and Upper West Side author Laura Weiss is hosting a dream dinner on June 6: five courses with ice cream, including such wild couplings as Beef Carpaccio with Goat Cheese Ice Cream. How very Iron Chef of her. Laura just published Ice Cream: A Global History and will be speaking about how ice cream is made all over the world. The event costs $45 and you can get tickets here.

It’s the last day to name the Museum of Natural History’s massive Mamenchisaurus dinosaur. At stake: an iPod touch, and a deep sense of pride. Three finalists will also win a “giant dinosaur prize package.” (image via AMNH)

    News:
Upper West Side parents are fuming about the decision to close PS 9’s gifted and talented program, particularly because they didn’t find out until they had already submitted applications. Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott took the blame for the late notice, and he said he’d meet personally with angry parents. (DNAinfo)

The condo board at the Pythian at 135 West 70th Street is suing Upper Breast Side, claiming it is illegally operating a retail store in the building. Upper Breast Side sells bras and other nursing gear on the ground floor, but says it’s a breastfeeding education and resource center, not a store. (The initial story on the controversy from the New York Times is here.) FYI, this is the same building where Lady Gaga’s parents live: What Would Gaga Think? (DNAinfo)

The Manchester, a 12-story co-op at 255 West 108th Street, held its 100th anniversary celebration this Sunday. Check out the cake below.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
