GRAY’S PAPAYA CRIES “MURDER” ABOUT FOOD COST INFLATION

May 24, 2011 | 9:21 AM
in ABSURDITY, NEWS

Gray’s Papaya on 72nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue is famous for its kooky political signs, and it has just put up another whopper. With food prices escalating, Gray’s is getting ready to raise its prices, but it doesn’t want to alienate its customers. So it put up a pretty crazy sign! Anyway, you can read the sign. Not much I can add there.

Food prices are on the way up, and companies like McDonald’s have already announced that they are seeing increases of 4 to 4.5% this year; Chipotle has also had to eat some costs as its food costs rise. And yet, the hot dogs at Gray’s Papaya are still $1.50, and the rest of the prices on the menu haven’t apparently changed either; employees said they’re not sure when the hikes will happen. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
