A MESSAGE FROM THE GREENMARKET: BRING US YOUR COMPOST!

compost

Bring your compost to the greenmarket, and you too can help save the world:

More and more Upper West Siders are saving their peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, and filters for composting at stations like this one at Tucker Square Greenmarket (67th St). Pamela, the Compost Coordinator shown here, cheerfully thanks each donor graciously, no matter how small the contribution. She says her station has increased by 5 times in a few months the amount of donated food scraps the city can turn into useful soil. Tucker Square accepts compost in several barrels on Thursdays 8-3:30 and Saturday 8-1; consult www.GrowNYC.org/Compost for schedules of other weekly greenmarkets that accept food scraps.

Thanks for the info on composting. Just a heads up that the link doesn’t work. I think there may be an ‘r’ missing from NYC.org.

Best way to store your compost is a brown paper bag in your freezer. Then you can just drop the bag with compost in the bin at the farmer’s market. Also no worries about smell while storing at home!

Yes! We store ours in plastic “shoeboxes” in the freezer so it’s easy to move around if necessary.

If you know of others in your building who compost, you (with the approval of your co-op/condo board or landlord/management company)can apply to have Sanitation pick up your compost from your building. DOS supplies a rat/raccoon proof bin and picks up three times a week! My building did it last year and it makes composting very convenient. It’s a win-win for NYC as it saves money on landfill fees and provides new soil for our parks.

Been doing it every week since it started at 97th Street and Amsterdam. Now wouldn’t think of throwing away compost material. It’s become a way of life.
