A 370-foot pier over the Hudson River that’s been deteriorating for years and was fully wrecked by Hurricane Sandy was reopened to the public this week. The reconstructed “A-dock” at 79th Street will give people a new place to walk out into the Hudson, as well as access to a floating kayak launch and sailboat mooring field. And within the next two weeks, they’re expecting to put picnic tables on it too, the parks department tells us.
Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver on the dock.
The reconstruction cost $6 million, funded by FEMA and the mayor’s office; it came in under budget, according to the city.
“For the A-Dock reconstruction, all wooden pilings were replaced with concrete-filled steel pilings; wooden piling caps and stringers were replaced with concrete and fiberglass respectively. Additionally, a new timber wave screen was installed along the complete northern and eastern stretch. And, new timber decking was installed along with new railings, gates, lights and, power and water pedestals for boats, bike racks and seating.”
The city expects to have “floating classrooms” there, and provide docking space for historic sailing boats to visit.
The dock was first built in 1937 under Robert Moses, using funds from the WPA.
Borough President Gale Brewer, Community Board 7 Chair Elizabeth Caputo and others cut the ribbon.

Are reservations required for the tables?
Just put a Whole Foods shopping bag and a ‘reserved’ sign with your name on it and it’s all yours. That’s how they do it at Lincoln Center.
will my “Associated Supermarket” bag get the same respect?
Do you simply obsessively post on WSR no matter what the topic is?
Do you feel that all of your comments are witty and enlightening?
I can answer this….
Yes and Yes!!!!!
God help us all.
s-boy,
Still doing the religious sermonizing?
Shamir, compared with the derisive attack:
“Do you simply obsessively post on WSR no matter what the topic is?
Do you feel that all of your comments are witty and enlightening?
…my Comment is not meant to offend.
Typical dannyboy… post an ambiguous remark with an undertone of cynicism and wait until somebody responds to argue the righteousness of his initial comment.
The good old “bait and switch”!
I considered the post somewhat witty and a conversation starter.
You Zulu chose to go negative.
Lighten up!
That is remarkable. Under budget !!! And so well done.
Thank you, kudos, bravo.????
Your team should be in charge of many more infrastructure projects.
It’s closed today (Sunday) cuz of the non-existent hurricane.
Don’t think the Parks Commish will have much success steering the dock anywhere with that tiller. Looks like the photo was taken on the Clearwater, which could very well have been tied up on the dock that day.
But minor flub – thanks for all you do.
The caption is wrong on the first photo. The commissioner is on a boat, not the dock.
My friend and I, as tourists, asked a gentleman in Riverside Park for directions to the boat basin Tues. morning, so we could walk along the Hudson for a while. He asked if we were going to the ribbon cutting event. We stumbled upon it, sat in attendance and then walked the new dock. Grateful for his suggestion. A nice event with a glimpse into how things get done in NYC. Congratulations, all!
