An elderly man got sick while riding the 1 train uptown Thursday night and died on the platform at the 72nd street train station.
“At 6:43 a customer reported an elderly male slumped over aboard an uptown 1 train,” an MTA spokesman told us. “EMS responded at 72 St, performed CPR, however the aided expired at the scene.”
We’re waiting for more information on the cause of death.
“A couple of us administered CPR to the deceased at 72 in advance of EMS arriving,” one reader told us. “Appeared homeless. 2 guys in scrubs, me, & a woman tried.”
“They had been working on him a couple minutes before I got to their car. Quite a mess.”
Several train passengers reported to us that they saw the body as they rolled through the station en route to 96th street. Trains were diverted around 72nd street.
“Our train slowly crawling through the 72nd St station, I looked out the window and saw a couple of police officers and EMT workers standing around what looked like a body with a white sheet over it on the platform,” wrote one reader.
The man’s body was taken out of the station around 9:20, another reader said.
yes, I saw this at about 8:30 PM Thursday night. it was a little shocking to see. it was obviously a body under the white sheet.

That is so sad & that he was homeless too .
Thanks for investigating and publishing this story- I wrote you about it as I couldn’t find any mention any metro breaking news website as a body bag was rolled up the stairs and outside the station at 9:20p. You have honored the memory of this passenger who passed. May he rest in peace.
