THROWBACK THURSDAY: HOT DOGS, FUR COATS AND MUSTACHES

This week, we’re posting more of Stephen Harmon’s awesome 1980’s street photos for our Throwback Thursday feature. There are many fine styles in the photos below, and one heck of a mustache.

This hot dog seller worked on 73rd and Broadway. Love how she’s standing on the box!

To participate in Throwback Thursday, please send us a photo, preferably by email to westsiderag@gmail.com. The subject line of the email should be “Throwback Thursday.” In the email include the photo and a brief description of who is in it and where it’s taken and when.

The best way to send an older photo, if you don’t have your images scanned, is to scan them into your computer or take a photo of the photo with a phone or digital camera. We’re not looking for perfect clarity, just a good sense of the image and some information. If this isn’t an option email us and we’ll figure out how to get a digital version of the image. (And yes, we’ll even accept photos from after 2000.)

Check out our other Throwback Thursday posts here.

Your photos of the Upper West Side by Steve Harmon are excellent, nostalgic and great faces.

Wonderful photos. A reminder that not too long ago, the West Side was an authentic middle class neighborhood – not full of mall chain stores and glass luxury buildings….

Right on Lisa! Sad but true. I don’t even feel like I’m in NYC anymore. Could be Any City, USA. And it’s certainly not for the neighborhood people anymore. Remember when the median and park benches were lined with elderly folk chatting with each other or just sitting peacefully enjoying the fresh air? You don’t even see that much anymore. I wish I had taken more photos back in the 70’s and 80’s!

Back in the late 70s and 80s I felt that the UWS was very special and I tried to reflect that in my photos and preserve that special feeling. I happy so many people are pleased with these photos. I thank all of you for your kind words.
