Trader Joe’s on 72nd and Broadway felt steamy on Saturday, and one reason may have been that its refrigerators were failing. The supermarket had to close off all of its refrigerators because they weren’t keeping anything cold. Hopefully, all will be well by the Sunday rush, when Upper West Siders are willing to wait in lines outside as if TJ’s was the hottest nightclub on the block. Thanks to Angie for the photos.

I’ve had so many spoiled purchases from their fridge, doesn’t surprise me. I’m not going to buy anything from the cold section for a long time.
All of them on one compressor? No redundancy? lol.
Might want to stay away for the next couple of days. A friend of my brother’s works at TJ’s (in another state, but still) and was recently telling me about working there when the refrigerators failed. When they got things working again, they restocked with much of the same food that had been in the failing fridges. Apparently this was common practice for their store, although it might depend on management. Still–be wary.

Since it first opened on 72nd Street a few years ago, it has seemed that many of the shoppers at this location are not West Side residents, but come from elsewhere specifically for TJ. (This is the case for 14th Street as well)
It is kind of unbelievable to see people willing to wait on line just to shop there….
I have stepped a few times into Trader Joe and walked out because of the crazy lines. As Yogi said the joint is usually so crowded that nobody goes there any more.
The first time I went to Trader Joe’s I really didn’t like it. But, for some reason. I went back one more time…and a time after that. Today, I appreciate all that Joe’s has to offer. For those of us who are into food, Trader Joe’s brings a lot to the table. And, oh yes, Trader Joe’s makes it clear that if you bought something you don’t like, just let ’em know and you’ll get a total credit in return. They’re not kidding – I’ve done it a few times myself.
And the oxymoron of the week has to be: “The joint is usually so crowded nobody goes there anymore.”

Where are all the customers in that pic? Did they close completely even tho you might need cashews and cookies?
Shopping early Sunday morning was interesting. According to the cashiers, they called in extra staff and removed every item that was in a cold or freezer case. They then started re-stocking what they could from their regular overnight restock delivery. Every cold case had at least two people opening new boxes to restock from the delivery as fast as they could. (It was an eerie feeling — as if we were in the store after-hours.) Even though, the freezer cases and most shelves were completely empty as the shipment contained only the items that they frequently turn-over, not contents for the entire store! Kudos to the staff for handling the situation so well!
I am an elderly woman with osteoarthritis. I drag myself to this store once a week and they are regularly out of things I want to buy, like black grapes, tilapia in breaded panko, aloo chat. They have not had their pumpkin flavored granola since October. The lines are often around 3 walls of the selling floor so people can’t get to the merchandise. It is a feng shui nightmare, with big pillars blocking access to other shelves. Who designed this place?
Then stop going!! As for the lines… Since I assume you’re retired, I suggest you go WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS AT WORK!! NO LINES THEN!! AND THEY WON’T BE AS SOLD OUT OF POPULAR FOODS!!
And please stay out of Fairway during weekends after 11AM and 4-7PM weekdays, and leave it to us able-bodied unretired folks. Otherwise I might have to run you over with my cart.
Oh, and stop complaining. Please.
I purchased refrigerated items on Saturday AM. Now I’m concerned!
