UWS Weekend: Great Things to Do in (and Around) the Neighborhood

By Tracy Zwick

November 6th through 8th

Jazz at Miller Theater: Saturday, November 7th at 7:30 p.m.; 2960 Broadway at West 116th Street; tickets start at $12

Pianist Kris Davis, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey are composers as well as award-winning musicians – and they’re all leading figures in experimental jazz. Sorey, a Columbia grad, was awarded a 2024 Pulitzer Prize for his “Adagio (For Wadada Leo Smith)” concerto. They’ll play at local gem The Miller Theater at Columbia University this Saturday night.

Smash Pumpkins!: Saturday, November 7th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Pier 84 (between West 43rd and 44th streets); free

BYOP (Bring Your Own Pumpkin) to smash, smash or squash into compost to help keep NYC parks beautiful, green and growing. Hudson River Park will provide the tools (bat, hammer or shovel) and give you 15 minutes to do your best smashing. There’ll be information provided about how composting works and what else is going on at Pier 84, just down the West Side Highway from the UWS.

Bake for UWS Thanksgiving Community Dinners

Get your whole family involved in helping others in our neighborhood celebrate Thanksgiving, deliciously and with a sense of plenty. The Goddard Riverside Community Thanksgiving Dinner organizing team is hoping to collect 10,000 homemade cookies to finish off a whole lot of donated dinners. Fill out the Cookie Pledge here and start thinking about recipes. Cookie drop-off will take place at St. Paul and St. Andrew Church at 263 West 86th Street on Sunday, November 22nd or Tuesday, November 24th. Cookies should be packaged in individual sandwich bags, with five to six cookies in each.

See “Goddesses in the Machine” at Bard Graduate Center Gallery: 38 West 86th Street between Columbus and Central Park West; open Tuesdays to Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with late hours on Fridays, open till  8 p.m.);  tickets start  $6

Another neighborhood treasure, BGC Gallery, opened a new exhibition not long ago, exploring how fashion helped shape the silent film era. Because movies had no sound, this show makes the case that costumes did much of the heavy lifting in terms of storytelling. Visitors can see gowns supplied by bigtime fashion houses and learn how designers used fabrics and embellishments to create drama and express character, all in black-and-white film. The exhibition contains more than 180 objects across three floors, including 16 surviving film costumes, photographs, posters, fashion illustrations, accessories and film clips. It also gets into the moviegoing experience and the rise of movie-star culture.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
