When choosing a private school, parents often consider academic programs, class sizes, and extracurricular opportunities. But another important question deserves attention: How will this school help my child grow in confidence, discover new interests, and become an independent thinker?
At BASIS Independent Manhattan, the belief that students are capable of more than they can imagine shapes an educational experience where academic challenge is paired with thoughtful guidance, encouragement, and opportunities for personal growth.
It’s an approach designed to help students become fearless thinkers, both inside and outside the classroom.
Finding Confidence, One Step at a Time
For one BASIS Independent Manhattan student, that growth began with something many children find intimidating: speaking in front of others.
In Grade 3, Bennett struggled with public speaking and performing. During a drama production, he stumbled over a line and left the stage. At a classroom publishing celebration, he was hesitant to read his work aloud.
But his story didn’t end there.
With encouragement from his Learning Expert Teachers and the Student Affairs team, Bennett gradually began stepping outside his comfort zone. By Grade 4, he had taken on the role of Pongo in an after-school production of 101 Dalmatians and become a student ambassador, leading admissions tours and speaking with prospective families.
The student who once hesitated to speak in front of an audience was now confidently welcoming new families into his school community.
His experience illustrates something meaningful about education: Growth isn’t always measured by a grade or test score. Sometimes, it’s found in the courage to try something that once felt impossible.
Where Academic Challenge Meets Thoughtful Support
Confidence also grows in the classroom, particularly when students are encouraged to ask questions, explore unfamiliar ideas, and work through challenges.
At BASIS Independent Manhattan, an advanced liberal arts and sciences curriculum brings together academic depth and expert teaching. Students are encouraged to think critically, explain their reasoning, consider different perspectives, and take increasing ownership of their learning.
Equally important is the support that helps them get there.Whether a student needs another explanation, encouragement to share an idea, or an opportunity to explore a new interest, teachers play an essential role in helping students recognize what they’re capable of achieving.
Beyond academics, opportunities in the arts, athletics, clubs, and school activities give students additional ways to discover their strengths, build relationships, and develop confidence.
What Should Parents Look for During a School Visit?
For families exploring private schools in Manhattan, a campus visit offers an opportunity to look beyond the curriculum and experience the community firsthand.
Notice how teachers engage with students. Listen to the questions children ask and how they explain their thinking. Ask about opportunities for students to pursue interests, take on challenges, and receive support when something feels difficult.
Most importantly, consider whether you can picture your child feeling both challenged and supported in that environment.
At BASIS Independent Manhattan, the goal is to nurture curious, confident, and independent thinkers who are prepared to embrace new possibilities.
