For one Wednesday evening, the Cathedral becomes a gathering place for music, wisdom and meditation with Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
The Upper West Side is rarely short on things to do.
But on Sept. 23, something a little harder to categorize is happening at 112th and Amsterdam.
The evening explores three things New Yorkers chase every day: power, presence and peace.
Power: What is your relationship with power?
Presence: What do people feel in your presence?
Peace: Can you be peaceful when the world isn’t?
These questions will come alive through a curated conversation, live music, and, of course, meditation.
So, who is Gurudev?
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is known worldwide for his vision of a stress-free, violence-free world, though many Upper West Siders may be discovering him for the first time.
You may have already seen his face on posters around the neighborhood.
Gurudev has spent over four decades teaching meditation and working on humanitarian and peace-building efforts, impacting more than 1 billion people across 182 countries.
But perhaps there’s a simpler way to think about it.
If you could discuss physics with Einstein, or sit at a piano with Beethoven, you probably would.
You can meditate with Gurudev beneath the soaring ceilings of St. John the Divine.
And you won’t be meditating alone.
Meditation is often something we do by ourselves, or through an app. Here, it happens together. There is power in collective stillness.
And there is room for one more.
No meditation experience is required. You don’t need to consider yourself spiritual.
Curiosity will do. Some evenings are simply worth being there for.
And about those 1,599 people in the headline?
There’s still one person missing. You.
