We’re excited.
West Side Rag has officially become a “fiscally sponsored” project of the Alternative Newsweekly Foundation (ANF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting independent journalism.
So what exactly does that mean?
Most importantly, it means that readers and organizations can now make tax-deductible contributions to support the Rag’s journalism.
Every day, our paid reporters document life on the Upper West Side, in consequential stories about schools, housing, public safety, our parks, and local government, but also, in features, essays, and columns, including our beloved “openings and closings,” covering community characters, history, culture, and everyday moments that make our neighborhood what it is, and connect us to one another.
We want to make sure the Rag remains strong for years to come.

Fiscal sponsorship allows us to pursue that mission while remaining the West Side Rag you know. The Alternative Newsweekly Foundation provides fundraising support and accepts charitable contributions on our behalf; the Rag retains editorial independence and receives a new funding stream for pursuing community-centered journalism. ANF is the fiscal sponsor for over a hundred local news outlets spanning the country.
