Upper West Side Sunday Crossword Puzzle #6

WSR crossword.

By Sam Gross

Welcome to the sixth edition of the Sunday crossword puzzle from West Side Rag, featuring all-local clues related to the Upper West Side

Before you dive in, here are a few tips for solving:

  • This puzzle is designed to be phone-friendly, but you’ll admittedly have more screen to work with if you play on a computer. The navigation bar above the puzzle also offers the option to Print it out if you’re more of a paper and pencil person.
  • If you get stuck, the online version has an Assist button that will let you Reveal or Check a letter, word, or the entire grid. You can also Ask a friend by sending them an invite code and the link to the puzzle.
  • All of the clues fit an Upper West Side theme, but crossword fans will notice this means a slightly sprawling grid and fewer intersections between words. We’ll continue working to craft the perfect puzzle that feels local to the neighborhood while offering the right amount of playability.

And if you’re not signed up yet, join our free daily newsletter for easy access to future puzzles and all of our stories as they’re published.

Fun puzzle, thank you! I didn’t really ‘get’ 14 down, but the clues about the park were interesting. Sometimes I forget that there are areas beyond the UWS. 😉

I have never heard of the answer at 10-across including the words “of the.” Was this an error?

The answer at 5 across made me think of my old friends Adam and Eve, also known as the Purple People, who used to dress in all purple and ride their purple bikes through Central Park, collecting horse manure to “feed” their ever-expanding “Garden of Eden” in the East Village, which eventually grew to 15,000 sq ft. Its loss was a loss not simply for the LES community but for Manhattan and NYC in general. It was an amazing place of calm and serenity in this chaotic and often insane city. And they were the most loving, kind, gentle people God ever put on this Earth. I still have their four-page handout.

They would say, “Thank you for not wearing leather.” Then they’d give me their purple printed hand out that had corporate numbers I could use to make long distance calls charged to the companies.

I remember seeing them for years but had no idea there was a story behind it. Thanks for sharing that!
