Summer is fully upon us in New York City, and there are more than 50 outdoor public pools open throughout the five boroughs, but just two of them are on the Upper West Side.
One is a mini-pool, and the other is an Olympic-sized pool that can fit up to 1,000 people.
The first is the Frederick Douglass Pool on Amsterdam Avenue, between West 100th and 101st streets. The mini-pool, which is meant for children and open to adults only when accompanied by a child, has dimensions of 40′ x 20′ x 3′.

The pool is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and has a break for pool cleaning between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Then there is the Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center in Central Park near 110th Street, which opened last summer. The pool is 285 feet long and is generally overseen by nine lifeguards.
The pool is free to enter and is also open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the same daily cleaning break between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. There is also a window each morning for adult lap swimming from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. from Monday through Friday, July 6 through August 28.
Additionally, a little out of our boundaries, there is the Sheltering Arms Pool at West 129th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The location has both an outdoor wading pool and an outdoor intermediate pool. It has the same hours as the other two pools.
There is also a free indoor pool for children within the Gertrude Ederle Center at 232 West 60th Street. It is an intermediate-sized pool that you can find out more about — HERE.
