A woman was robbed at gunpoint early Friday morning on the Upper West Side, a police spokesperson told West Side Rag.
A 45-year-old woman was in the vicinity of 4 West 62nd Street, between Broadway and Central Park West, around 1:40 a.m, when a man approached her and flashed a gun, police said.
The robber then grabbed the woman’s cellphone and fled the scene, police said. The woman wasn’t injured in the process, police said.
An NYPD spokesperson added that the incident was “domestic in nature,” which means the two people knew each other on some level, but the spokesperson did not specify how.
There have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.

Between this violent robbery, a slashing during robbery in April, and the recent attempted rape, why has the area around Columbus Circle of all places become sketchy?
IF, as NYPD says, the people know each other it’s more a domestic type dispute than bears absolutely no relation to the neighborhood.
I know some of us live to overreact but the sky is not falling.
I immediately disregard domestics. That’s not crime that’s going to affect anyone else.
It’s all of Manhattan. Doesn’t matter where.
Inequality.
That’s BS. We have to stop normalizing this type of thing because of inequality.
I think it was sarcasm.
Inequality makes men rape women?
It shouldn’t be, I get the sense that the answer here is yes.
Upper West Slide!
While it’s probably not an issue in this instance, I don’t quite understand the point of stealing a cell phone. They are usually password protected and the owner can just brick it later. Can someone explain it?
The robber knew the victim and he wanted that phone for a reason. It’s not rational.
My cell was stolen in the park and I watched online as it traveled down 5th Avenue to the 40’s. Apparently it’s a known spot for resale and tourists are still being scammed into buying them.
You erase it, replace the SIM card,
It’s got value.
But the police statement says the people were ‘acquainted’ and as between people who have some kind of history the motive to steal the phone could relate to something on the phone – a photo or text exchange – and other than for financial gain.
I don’t believe that’s correct. It’s based on the emei/serial number. Once that’s disabled, I believe the phone will not work for anyone.
I think it can be disassembled for parts.
They don’t want the victim to call for help?
Or they’re hoping it’s unlocked enough to use the wallet for a few purchases before it’s turned off.
We live on a small island of approximately 22 square miles with on any given day close to two million people jammed into it. Given that crime is low. We aren’t even in the top 10 nationally. Doesn’t mean you don’t get concerned or put a little fire behind the NYPD but one robbery doesn’t make a crime wave.
Crime is low? I live in the 60’s on the UWS and just near me there have been 3 purchase snatchings, a knifing, an attempted rape and an assault. I have almost been assaulted twice.
Maybe statistics aren’t accurate? Maybe they are only counting convictions, and what a surprise that would be since they aren’t prosecuting anyone????
I’m so tired of people telling me how safe the city is “statistically” when nobody knows how they are coming up with their numbers. Get the app that shows crimes as they happen on the UWS and your head will spin.
George not saying no crime. And also not saying there should be no concern or pressure on NYPD. The statistics are good. It’s kind of like seeing the city as dangerous and thinking like you shouldn’t play golf because you might get struck by lightning or not go to the beach because of sharks. We aren’t living in those golden years of the Koch administration when crime was really bad. I could tell you stories about back then.
The count is based on reports to the NYPD. Period.
It’s updated every Monday around 2 PM , here:

There are two major crimes that always get reported, homicides and auto thefts (if your car is stolen you need the report for insurance purposes, if only to get a refund on the unused portion of your polcy term).
Guess what?
The drop in those categories is far greater than the overall drop. About 60% lower than when “Giuliani made us safe.”
I walk that street between the Park and my home late at night all the time !
RE: An NYPD spokesperson added that the incident was “domestic in nature”
Wow, that is really burying the lead – in the 4th paragraph of a 5-paragraph article.
