George Morrison Exhibition and Discussion at the Met: Friday, March 27th from 6 to 7 p.m.; Fifth Avenue near East 82nd Street. Free with museum admission (which is pay-what-you-wish for New Yorkers)
The Met’s landmark show of Ojibwe painter George Morrison’s work is on for another two months in Gallery 735 of the museum’s Fifth Avenue location. Visitors can see a few dozen of his pieces along with archival material that demonstrates Native American art’s influence on American modernism. This weekend, painter Hazel Belvo and Professor Brenda Child (Red Lake Ojibwe) will talk about how Morrison connected his creativity with activism, and how his love of NYC and jazz impacted his work, aesthetic, and identity.

If you’re looking for a place to watch the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 on big screens this weekend with fellow fans and a brew or burger in your hand, Hudson Yards along the West Side Highway has options. Bronx Brewery (bowls, burritos, nachos), O’Tooles Way (sliders, corned beef, bar pies), and Oyamel (Mexican small plates) will all be offering specials. If anyone in the family would rather shop, or walk along the Empire State Trail – which takes you all the way up the UWS – those are right there too. Mystery and Wonder: A Legacy of Golden Age Magicians in NY: at NYPL’s Library for the Performing Arts; 40 Lincoln Center Plaza (entrance at 111 Amsterdam Avenue between West 64th and 65th streets); open 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays, and closed Sunday; free
Check out the library’s historic archival materials related to the art of magic and the lives of magicians who performed in NYC during the golden age. The golden age of magic took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when a surge of magicians refined their art in the city. The show explores how magic knowledge was passed down, and highlights rare items from the collection of Dr. Saram Ellison, co-founder of the Society of American Magicians. Photos, programs, correspondence, artifacts and original posters are all on display.
Tour the Cathedral of St. John the Divine: Saturday, March 28th from 11 a.m. to noon, or 1 to 2 p.m.; 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (near West 112th Street); tickets $18
As we approach holy week for Christians, it’s an opportune time to explore some of the standout features and holdings of UWS treasure the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The one-hour family-friendly “Highlights Tour” teaches visitors about the Cathedral’s history, architecture and artwork, from the Great Bronze Doors to the seven Chapels of the Tongues, and beyond. A more adventurous “Vertical Tour” has visitors climbing 124 feet through spiral staircases to see stained glass windows and sculpture. It’s available at noon and 2 p.m., for ages 12 and up.

AND, as previously mentioned in WSR’s Monday Bulletin, there’s also the “No Kings” march (https://nokingsnyc.com/) starting 2:00 PM Saturday at Seventh Avenue and Central Park South — for those of us, if any, who feel dictatorship by a mad monarch is perhaps not the ideal approach to American governance.
In fact, a group of UWSiders plan to gather at 11:15–11:30 AM at the Frederick Douglass Sculpture (NW corner of Central Park) to walk down together to Columbus Circle for the main rally (see https://www.mobilize.us/handsoffnyc/event/924562/).
