March 20th through 22nd

Movie: “In America” at The New York Historical: Friday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m.; 170 Central Park West at West 77th St.; tickets start at $10

This Oscar-nominated Jim Sheridan film (2002) follows the struggles and triumphs of an Irish family arriving illegally in NYC. So it’s fitting that NYC-based Irish writer Colum McCann will be the guest speaker at this screening. It’s sponsored by the Uptown Film Center. Coincidentally, the Uptown Film Center is offering hard-hat tours of the erstwhile Metro Theater on Broadway at West 99th Street, which is undergoing a major renovation, this Saturday. Registration is required.

Community Volunteer Day in Riverside Park: Saturday, March 21st from 10 a.m. till 12:30 p.m.; register here

Riverside Park Conservancy’s hosting a day of outdoor community service with its Early Spring Cleaning event this Saturday. Volunteers will help Conservancy staff members care for and maintain our local green spaces. Registration is required. Gloves, tools and materials will all be provided, but volunteers are advised to bring a filled water bottle and wear long pants and sunscreen.

Writers-A-Go-Go, One Acts in Riverside Park: Saturday March 21st and Sunday, March 22nd at 2 p.m.; 102nd Street Field House in Riverside Park; reserve a spot here

Join the Hudson Classical Theater Company for an afternoon of original 10-minute plays by local contemporary playwrights, directed and performed by Hudson Classical company members. The playwrights will participate in a discussion after the show. Ticket reservations are free, but donations will be accepted in support of Riverside Park Conservancy. The show and subsequent talk will take place in the recently renovated 102nd Street Field House in Riverside Park. (Enter the park at 102nd Street and Riverside Drive and descend to the promenade level. The stairs to the Field House are across the promenade at 102nd Street.)

Columbia Baseball vs. Harvard: Saturday March 21st, and Sunday, March 22nd at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium, 505 West 218th Street; free (no tickets required)

Columbia’s Lions will host their home and Ivy League opener this weekend against Harvard at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium for a doubleheader this Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Sunday’s game will start at noon. The Lions and Crimson are coming off lackluster early results: The Lions are 2-11, while the Crimson are 1-12. It’s early!

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
