No Arrest After Man Attacked Outside of UWS Beacon Theater: ‘Traumatic Brain Injury’

No arrest has been made 17 days after a Long Island man was attacked and badly beaten outside of the Beacon Theater on the Upper West Side, an NYPD spokesperson confirmed to West Side Rag on Tuesday morning.

Sean Llewellyn, 47, was leaving the concert venue on Broadway near West 75th Street on November 30, after a Trey Anastasio show, when he went to buy an item from a street vendor stationed outside, according to NYPD and other reports.

Llewellyn, a Point Lookout, Long Island resident, handed the man a $20 bill, but the seller ran off with the money without returning the proper change, as reported by the New York Post. Llewellyn, along with another man, ran after the seller but they were quickly attacked by a group of people, according to police.

Llewellyn was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition with injuries to the face and head, while the other man refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

“He [Llewellyn] suffered a traumatic brain injury and a broken eye socket that will require surgery. Since then, Sean has been hospitalized and faces a long, challenging road to recovery,” reads a GoFundMe set up for Llewellyn, a father of three. “Sean is a dedicated family man, a proud sports dad, and the ‘fun coach’ everyone loves. As the primary provider for his family, including his three young boys at home, this tragedy has created an overwhelming financial strain.”

The fundraiser has raised $196,000 of its $250,000 goal as of Tuesday.

There have been no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Certainly sounds like a “set-up” to me. How horrific. I hope and pray that he recovers quickly. And bravo to all those who contributed to the GFM account.

Llewellyn, especially spelled that way, is not very common. This makes me wonder if he is related in any way to Desmond Llewellyn, the actor who played “Q” in the first dozen or so James Bond films. Sean would be about the right age to be the son of one of the actor’s two sons.

Speaking of Llewellyn – my first name is Llewelyn. The difference in the spelling is attributed to the sex of the person. Two lls denote masculine and one l equals feminine. I was named for my grandmothers and a Godfather. Lula, Louella and Llewellyn.

Now I’m curious. I’ll have to learn about Desmond Llewellyn. He wasn’t on my radar.

My prayers go out to Mr. Llewellyn and his family. What happened to him was sad and unnecessary. There is too much petty violence happening these days. Horrible.

I don’t think it is worth the effort of a set up to steal this guy’s $20

And there are a lot of security cameras along Broadway and the side streets, a bit strange that the NYPD hasn’t released video.

Sounds harsh, I for one think even folks from Long Island or FL have agency.

No arrest will be made.

The victim’s life will never be the same.

This is the New New York.

Please be careful and mindful of your surroundings at all time.

Well, so far true, the NYPD hasn’t arrested anyone. Seems odd given the numerous cameras on the block.

Right, the police can’t investigate assaults, and also the various merchants + Beacon Theatre management doesn’t want this solved. /s

Interesting point,

Wouldn’t Beacon want it solved ?

They could then say how safe it is,

Doesn’t mean they didn’t identify the perpetrators. They might be in the run.

My condolences to the victim, if is truly horrific.

If the NYPD had identified the suspects, then the NYPD is remiss in not releasing names.

Anyhow, given the numerous cameras on the block, seems odd that the NYPD hasn’t released an image or two.

Don’t buy from street vendors. Don’t chase people down for less than $20. Understand that the DA won’t prosecute. Adjust your behavior to deal with the new normal in Manhattan.

After every concert you have people selling shirts on the street by the Beacon. If it was one of them it shouldn’t be that hard to find them. Somebody supplies them with the shirts, somebody pays them.

And the non-violent change giving tee shirt vendors would likely want the perpetrators caught, since now no one is going to trust them.

The tee shirts are usually Beacon Theatre event specific. So, if stolen, the victim of the theft would likely have an idea of where to look for the thieves or their fences.

This man’s life is changed for good by this injury. I hope the perpetrators are caught tried and given a long sentence. I carry a shillelagh as a walking stick. It is capable of breaking bones. I hope I never have to use it. Great generosity for the GFM

Curious how this sort of statement is never made when drivers injure or maim pedestrians…
I had to look up what a shillelagh was, but now that I have, it looks very useful for giving a firm tap to cars that are blocking the cross walk.

Illegal vendors are part of the diversity that UWSers love to vote for. They’re organized gangs. Go down to Canal street where tax paying businesses have their doors blocked and streets clogged and where New Yorkers are robbed, threatened and assaulted by vendors while the city does nothing. Yet when ICE moves in to arrest the vendors who are illegals , people protest. You vote for this and there is more coming.

The illegal vendors on Canal Street, or elsewhere, make change, and don’t assault customers.

Furthermore, Canal Street is not full of brick and mortar stores selling fake Rolexes and fake Prada bags.

I think there is probably more to this story than the article lets on. What do you mean by a “group of people?” Why would they attack Llewellyn? Who was the “another man ?” What was the item that the victim was buying?

I do feel badly for the victim here, but I’m not quite sure we have the full account of what happened here
