This holiday season, Rutgers Presbyterian Church is bringing back a beloved tradition with a twist. On Tuesday, December 2nd at 7:00 PM, Music Director Gabriel Evans and special guest singer Landon Priess invite you to an old-fashioned Christmas sing-along—but this isn’t your typical concert.
“It’s really about gathering around the piano together,” Gabe explains. “Everyone comes and sings. We want it to be like a conversation, where people share their stories about their favorite Christmas songs.”
The inspiration for this evening comes from a simple but powerful idea: music evokes our most cherished memories. For Gabe, who grew up in a musical household in rural Kentucky where his mother served as church music director, this connection between song and story runs deep.
“I’ve always wanted to do a Christmas party where we just hang out around the piano and sing Christmas carols,” he says. This sing-along takes that idea of an intimate living room gathering and brings it into the
beautiful sanctuary at Rutgers. Chairs will be arranged around the piano, creating a warm, inviting
atmosphere where every voice matters and every memory is welcome.
For Gabe, leading music at Rutgers represents something deeply personal. “I come from a very rural,
small town in Kentucky. In my wildest dreams, I would never think that I would be up leading a professional choir and orchestra in a New York City church.”
He pauses, reflecting on his journey. “The first time I ever heard an orchestra live was when I was 18
years old, when I went to college. And to be up in front of one actually leading it—it gives me a great sense of accomplishment.”
But what matters most to him is the warmth these gatherings create, especially during the holidays. “The Christmas concerts are always my favorite,” Gabe says. “It’ always a lot of love, a lot of warmth, and a lot of just joy.”
What makes Rutgers’s; approach to music unique is its commitment to inclusivity and authenticity. The church has built a reputation for eclectic, high-caliber music that welcomes everyone—from seasoned musicians to enthusiastic novices.
“We have people who are volunteering their time and want to be there, who have this mutual love of
music,” Gabe notes. “It’s not necessarily that they’re there for religious purposes. A lot of people are just there for the sense of community.”
The sing-along embodies what Gabe loves most about the Christmas season at Rutgers: bringing people together through music. And yes, cookies will be included to make the evening even more festive! Whether you know every verse of “Silent Night”; or just want to hum along to “Jingle Bells,” welcome at Rutgers. Bring your voice, bring your stories, and bring your holiday spirit.
