At first glance, a shark was spotted Wednesday afternoon in the Hudson River, but upon second look, it appears to be some sort of strange sculpture.
“Spotted in Riverside Park! Just south of Pier I,” a tipster emailed in.
The scene seems to show a woman on a surfboard with a fishing rod standing over a shark. The figures were photographed just south of Pier I in Riverside Park South near West 70th Street.
When you zoom in on the photo, though, it becomes more apparent that the figures are fake.

West Side Rag visited the location Thursday morning to see if the phony person and shark were still there, but the installation was gone.
If anybody knows the backstory, please let us know in the comments.

Strange indeed. And unnecessary
Does everything have to be “necessary?”
Weird! Someone on this site has a problem with something so trivial. A first for sure.
Nonsense, it’s delightful!
You seem fun
You’re gonna need a bigger sense of humor.
Well done.
What’s really necessary after all?
Boooo fun
For those under 5 it’s sure is.
I was more interested in the dorsal in in the middle of the first image.
Shark Week is in July – lousy timing. But I think Shark Week has jumped the shark anyway…
Take your pick: An artist with an interesting sense of humor. Or a joker playing with AI, not too convincingly.
It’s probably part of a series of installations. There’s one of a bear by Columbia ( West side of Broadway, around 114-116 streets).
Cool, is that still there?
It’s a promotion for Columbia sportswear. There was a bear in front of Tom’s as well!
LEGALIZE COMEDY!!!
One hears comedy, along with free speech, is thriving in Saudi Arabia….
you get cancelled here (Colbert) or there (Kashoggi)
Highly compensated, too.
Indeed! It’s a veritable other Eden, a demi-paradise, where one can even yap one’s head off about Charlie Kirk (maybe they haven’t heard of him there?) at liberty. Granted, trash-talking the royals can get one disemboweled or indentured, but it’s a small price to pay, right?
Hmm, wonder whether they’re accepting deportees.
Omg… what a dreadful comment. But very typical for this commentator.
It’s easy to brand someone else’s comment as dreadful; it’s not so easy to leave a dreadful comment yourself. So congratulations.
Totally unnecessary! 👎
Your comment?😛
You’re so sad
“What looked like a shark in the Hudson River, ended up being some sort of strange installation.”
What a completely NYC news item.
That’s delightful, why was it removed?
I’ve been looking for a shark in that river my whole life. Guess I’m not the only one.
ai – how utterly absurd, a complete waste of time
The time it took you to post this? If it was indeed AI, wouldn’t it look more real?
There’s a contradiction in your article: is it AI or” a structure that was there and removed. ” I don’t understand. I zoomed in and I don’t see anything that would indicate AI or not but I’m not an expert on spotting AI.
I’d like to know what you see when you zoom in that would indicate either of the above. Thx
Probably a relative of the woman spotted leaving dead chickens on West End.
Maybe that phony person , fishing pole, and shark will show up in other locations this beautiful Fall.
AI.
Love it. Keep NYC weird.
Because the halocline shifts as far north as West Point it is not unusual for bull sharks to follow the brackish water as far as it goes. While they may not be sighted scientists tell that they are there.
