A man was hospitalized after a car and motorcycle collided this weekend on the Upper West Side, police confirmed to West Side Rag.
The crash, which took place Saturday around 5:20 p.m. on Amsterdam Avenue and 94th Street, prompted a large emergency response, with dozens of police officers and multiple fire trucks, NYPD said and photos of the scene show.
A 59-year-old woman was driving a 2012 Honda eastbound on 94th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, when a 33-year-old man riding a Viper motorcycle traveling north on Amsterdam collided with the passenger side of the car, police said.
The driver of the motorcycle was placed on a stretcher and into an ambulance and taken to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition, according to police and eyewitnesses.
“Bad crash at Amsterdam Avenue,” Eric Levenson wrote to the Rag in an email. “There were about 5-6 police vehicles and ambulance on scene, and traffic on Amsterdam was rerouted.”

The car was driving east bound and the viper was travelling north. Someone must have run a red light.
I hope the car is OK!
I hope your mother is OK. I wouldn’t be with you as my child.
Seriously? You’re worried about the CAR?
What kind of person would say that about a 33 year old that could be dead? Somebody’s son/ father/ husband. What is wrong with you? What a bitter ugly sad excuse for a human you are.
I doubt my earlier comment will be printed so I’m trying again. There was a man taken by ambulance to the hospital. I f the same were to happen to you would you want other human beings to worry about the inanimate objects involved?
tbh, with the out of control, riding too fast, riding the wrong way, not stopping at lights, signs, and riding on sidewalk cyclists e-bikers, and these Vesper thingamadoos I can’t believe this doesn’t happen more often.
he’s guilty already?
probably
Editors:
The Viper motorcycle is a massive V10 machine; it’s really uncommon.
This was likely a Viper scooter, so not much different than a Vespa.
It being a scooter, not a fullsized motorcycle — eg a Kawasaki Ninja, makes it much more likely that the driver of the scooter ran the red, but without details we can’t be sure.
Do Viper scooters require liscence plates?
Yes.
About the only gas powered scooters in NY that don’t need plates, insurance, and a driver with a basic driver’s license are motorized skateboards.
In other words, Vespas need license plates.
Now, a lot of jerks with plated motorscooters will turn the corner of the plate up with a pair of pliers so traffic cams can’t see the full plate number.
While I agree about the problems with e bikes and the like it seems irrelevant here. A car was travelling eastbound on 94th St. That is the correct direction. A motorcycle was travelling north on Amsterdam. Also the correct direction. Neither was on the sidewalk. It seems someone, we don’t know who, must have run a red light.
Ah, I saw the aftermath of this tho not the crash. People over near the bikes side didn’t seem to know if someone had been hurt or not.
No apparent license plate on the moto. Possibly obscured by the angle of the photo and is there, or was knocked off in the crash.
I was there and one of the people who called 911. I don’t remember there being a plate on the motorcycle. Definitely was not lost in the crash.
I didn’t see the crash, but I heard it. By the time
I turned around and moved the couple of steps needed to see the crash site, the light could have definitely changed. When I observed the light, it was green for Amsterdam. I would venture to guess one of three things happened:
1) the driver of the car ran the light right after it changed to red and the motorcycle had the green.
2) the motorcycle rider ran the red and the driver of the car had the green.
Or 3) no one ran the light: the driver of the car entered the intersection on the yellow and the motorcycle was at speed passing the stopped cars on Amsterdam and the light turned green on Amsterdam before the car had cleared the intersection.
I am also not so sure that the motorcycle collided with the car and not the other way around. It looked like the front wheel of the car had gone over the motorcycle. There was not a lot of damage to the car but there was a decent amount of damage to the motorcycle. Some pieces of it were on the north side of the intersection. So it was very possible that the car struck the motorcycle rather than the motorcycle striking the car. I believe they called CIS to the scene because the car and motorcycle were still on site hours later with a precinct cop standing guard. So it would be CIS that would be able to determine exactly what happened.
All I will give info wise. It was a brand new. Just purchased that day
If #3 is the case, then technically the motorist was the one who had run a red light. Law in NYS is that if you haven’t cleared the intersection by the time the controlling light turns red, that’s a violation, you ran the light.
In some jurisdictions (e.g., California) it’s different, so long as you caught a little bit of the yellow upon entering the intersection it’s not a violation. Then it’s the responsibility of cross traffic not to enter the intersection until it’s clear, even if the cross traffic green has activated.
Still not casting judgment on which of the 3 things happened tbc!
Walked by it. That bike is not registered
Time for the 20th Precinct to start working/stop playing on their phones/start enforcing traffic laws.
Ok. But this happened in the 24th precinct.
Leave the NYPD alone. You have no idea what their life is like. You should thank them for their service and be grateful that any cops stay in NYC.
maybe you should defund them.
In addition to what I said below, I want to also add that it was great seeing my neighborhood coming together to help out someone no one knew: people were out directing traffic around the scene. One woman was down on the ground timing his pulse until NYPD ESU arrived. Lots of people came to render aid, some just reminding “don’t move him!” I think at least 10 different people called 911 at the same time.
Someone must stop the bicycles from endangering our streets!
Yeah, the bicycle did so much damage to the car. Instead of worrying about bicycles, we should get rid of all cars. A single person driving around a 4,000 pound death machine while staring at their phone. Most of the time, the cars are napping in the street wasting space.. but when they’re not, they usually only have one or two people in them.
Cars are the problem pal.
when are we gonna get ALL bikes off our streets and follow a z safety First program
like before
Comment section is surprisingly lit here
This much we do know- the grey car had to be carrying some speed and momentum to go over the motorbike and wedged it underneath the chassis. This fits the scenerio of what we (pedestrians) see often as lights turn yellow then red. Drivers speed up to “make” the light. On the Avenues, it’s almost expected that after the light turns solid red, the last vehicles will still go through. We’ve normalized the behavior from drivers long time ago, because slamming on the brakes at 35 mph creates a different kind of hazard.
The child in the top photo is on an illegal motorbike for his age?
It’s a kid’s dirt bike. He’s wearing a helmut. Get a grip. 🙂
She had a dog on her lap while she was driving and sped up on a yellow light turning red. He has a fractured spine , broken right hip, broken right leg along with broken toes. Broken right shoulder , broken right thumb . Fractured skull . This should not have happened. She was speeding and this could have been one of our kids crossing the street or our elderly it’s literally by the little craft shop.
