UPDATE: Monday, August 11 at 2:15 p.m.: An arrest has been made in connection to a man getting slashed Saturday evening, near the corner of West 109th Street and Columbus Avenue, police told West Side Rag on Monday morning.

Joshua Liner, 66, was arrested and charged Saturday night with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.

NYPD did not have information as of Monday about what led up to the slashing.

By Gus Saltonstall

A man was slashed this weekend on the Upper West Side, a police spokesperson confirmed to West Side Rag.

The attacked happened around 5 p.m. on Saturday at West 109th Street and Columbus Avenue, when a 31-year-old man was slashed in the neck, police said.

The man was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition, NYPD added.

There have been no arrests, and police did not have information as of Sunday morning about what led up to the slashing.

Y’all better consider Sliwa for Mayor or this will only get worse.

Don’t waste your vote on Sliwa, no one is going to vote for him. A vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mandami, the only option to not have no police protection and NYC being as bad as it is now is to vote for CUOMO. Sliwa has no support among Republicans – please, don’t be foolish. The only logical option is Cuomo, since he has the support for safer streets.. Sliwa should have stayed with the guardian Angels where he was most effective.. At least then, folks were not pushed on the tracks.

I blame Biden actually. Sitting in Delaware, writing books, he could have personally prevented this.

At what?

He doesn’t even live in NYC, and hasn’t since at least the early 1990s, more like the late 1970s.

No, he’s going to make sure that criminals like this spend a lot of time in jail though.

it’s a multi-factor approach. first, support and unleash the police to be aggressive in doing their jobs instead of avoiding situations and prosecute vigorously criminals. you might recall that rudy achieved massive declines in crime. it can be done.

You know that Adams is an ex-cop, and even he can’t motivate the NYPD to do their jobs, like foot patrols.

Anyhow, things were better when Bill D was mayor, so Sliwa doesn’t make sense.

Last, unless the cops were right there, the slashing would still have occurred. The question is why people suppose responding with a slashing helps their case.

Like what programs? I believe it has everything to do with homeless industrial complex that benefits from opening multiple shelters without proper treatment options provided.

Homeless industrial complex – lol. Be real. Yes, some landlords get to overcharge for temporary housing, but if we had a real mayor, we’d create more low income housing in the first place. And those landlords would be just fine. Also, there’s a lot that could be done to help homeless short of having the police deal with them. If only the money behind ICE existed for other things…

Cops don’t prevent crime. They fill out paperwork after the crime. Before the crime, they are on their iphones texting.

The NYPD used to prevent crimes, now they stay out of the way, because they don’t trust the city and the leadership, it happened during De Blasio and continues. Adams is hated by most Cops and always has been. Adams is a racist and openly expressed his anti-white views. Remember the Cracker speech, where he was giving a speech in Harlem and referred to white cops as crackers?

How soon social workers got to the scene?

Social workers are there to support law enforcement, bridging the gap between law enforcement and social services. They would be a resource to both officers situations involving mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, and homelessness issues. NOT VIOLENT CRIMES….and you know this.

Please describe what exactly social workers will do. They can get the person to the hospital after which they will be discharged in 72 hours. The police can exactly the same thing.

Actually, it was. Much worse. There were 1645 murders in NYC in 1975, and 391 in 2023. If you think differently, you weren’t here.

A city can’t be healthy with crimes committed and then the criminals released back onto the street. Who will end this dysfunction? Cuomo more likely than the other dudes. Mamdani will focus on keeping perps out of prison. But we need them to be in prison.

Really? One person gets cut and everyone’s whining like this was the 70’s or something. Snowflakes, the lot if ya. Crime is pretty much the lowest it’s been, and Adams has nothing to with this. Other factors are driving the trend. Pull yer heads outta yer fourth points of contact. Sliwa is a schmoo btw. As is Adams. Have an awesome day 🙂

I have been living on the Upper West Side, since 1977. Manhattan since 1972. I have never been the victim of any kind of criminal behavior. I have seen people in my neighborhood, and on the subways, that I would not care to be near for any period of time. I look at NYC as a relatively safe city. You need to keep your eyes open of course and be diligent. But I would say that about anywhere.

I guess you do not ever walk around 83rd Street between Columbus Avenue & Amsterdam Avenue & see all the people very high on drugs or alcohol sleeping all over the nearby area or yelling at anyone who is walking by or asking for money? Or sleeping at the bus stop, or the stairs on 83 street, or the stabbing in the school yard from one of them on 3 of the other junkies just 2 weeks ago in the afternoon? Or see them screaming at each other at 2 to 3 in the morning? I think you should open your eyes a little wider!
