The New and Improved Oracle at Delph…uh…AI on the UWS

By Gary Martin

Who needs the Oracle at Delphi— that renowned sanctuary in ancient Greece, dedicated to the god Apollo — where people consulted before making important life decisions? Now we’ve got AI!

Gary B. Martin is an illustrator and animator who has lived on the Upper West Side for more than 30 years. His illustrations appear in the Rag on Sundays, chronicling life in the neighborhood, New York City, and the Universe. See them all here. For a broader range of Gary’s work, including animations and other motion graphics, please visit www.martoons.com

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate. AI is sensational and frightening all at once. Gary’s brilliant illustration captures the feeling I get every time I realize that yes, Chat GPT is all-knowing.

Went to a minute clinic yesterday and was asked what brought me in, my first urge was to say, car. I answered, truthfully, Google search. They told me chatGPT is one of their main responses.

What could possibly go wrong?

Perhaps the better question is, what could possibly go right?

In Martoonerville: Black Mirror, Gary trains an AI to be his therapist, best friend and wife. What can possibly go wrong?
