UPDATE: Tuesday, May 20 at 9 p.m.: A spokesperson for Animal Care Center told West Side Rag that, sadly, the deer was severely injured and had to be humanely euthanized on Tuesday to prevent further suffering.
By Daniel Katzive
An injured deer was seen wandering the streets of the Upper West Side on Tuesday morning.
A witness shared photos with West Side Rag of the animal apparently limping from West 72nd and Riverside Drive up to West End Avenue around 10 a.m.
An NYPD spokesman told West Side Rag that officers responding to a 10:03 a.m. 911 call observed a deer with a severely injured leg at West End Avenue and West 73rd Street. The deer was sedated by Emergency Service Unit officers and transported by Animal Care Center to one of their facilities for treatment.
WSR has reached out to ACC of New York and will update this story with any information they can provide about the deer’s condition and prognosis.

I feel like RFK Jr is somehow involved in this
someone help that bambi
oh, deer.
(I’m first, what did I win?)
A years supply of venison steaks.
and I repeat, “oh, deer!”
Venison at 11….
I didn’t know we had deer in our parks. Poor baby. Please update!
Glad the deer is in safe hands. Thanks for reporting. 🍑
deer was severely injured and had to be humanely euthanized on Tuesday to prevent further suffering.
I read a story in an upstate newspaper a few years ago about how deer are attracted to onion bialys. Something about the yeast and onion combination that drives them wild. Spotting a deer headed for Kossar’s was inevitable. With composting of bialys there will no doubt be an infestation.
usually deer don’t like onions or any strong scent. Maybe you’re joking though.
That breaks my heart to see her like that and in an urban landscape as well—if it’s a sprain she can recover but broken I don’t think she comes back from that —also this time of year there is often a fawn she’s feeding as well so if she’s done the fawns done too—I really hope the vets can help her
The fawn has likely been hidden in the park near 79th while the doe went to forage. If you see a fawn curled up among the brush, call the Animal Care Center. Otherwise it will starve.
When is hunting season in the city?
It’s looking for some help.
On Citizen app, there was a notification @ 9:54 this morning reporting that a U-haul truck hit a deer on the Henry Hudson Parkway north near 79th Street
Poor thing
We are just a few national disasters away from that old Spike Jonze Nike New Year’s Day commercial.
Thx for the update—looked like a pretty bad injury so I’m not surprised—can’t believe the number of callous joking comments here for this poor suffering animal —and she’s probably got a fawn that’s dehydrating and dying—very sad
It is heartbreaking. And yes, the jokes are disheartening.
Thanks for being a compassionate voice, Sby, amidst all the “humor” about a suffering creature.
Yes I just don’t see the humor in a mortally wounded animal fighting for its life on busy streets in obvious distress
Dark humor is sometimes necessary when you’re trapped in a bad situation, I do get that, but people seem to think it’s a badge of honor to be cruel right now. Vice signaling, you might say.
I agree with every word you’re written, Sby, Interesting how the comments about the suffering of an innocent sentient being – of whatever species – is met with heartfelt sadness and compassion by some – and apparently seen as an opportunity to showcase “comedic skills” by others. Predictable – and, yes, sad.
You eat meat? Pigs are as smart as dogs.
I doubt she goes to mock the pigs before they’re butchered.
It seems as if wry humor, sarcasm and complaint are built into many an Upper West Sider. They have nothing better to do.
Well, I have all of those qualities. But I also have compassion.
very sad
Deer are actually a huge problem on Staten Island.
Why was a U Haul truck on the Henry Hudson Pkwy to begin with? I thought that trucks and buses are illegal on parkways?
They are
People who rent trucks don’t know where they can’t drive them unfortunately.
Seems only fair that we eliminate another car lane for a deer lane because it’s good for the deer, the environment, and all of my ride share stocks.
I don’t know much about deer healthcare, but I see plenty of 3-legged dogs around, why not a deer?
I’m not an expert but I think it’s much more related to a horse or other grazing animals—they don’t survive on 3 legs—prob has something to do with the hooves and the stresses there
It helps that the dogs have people around to help, live in people houses and get food handed to them, I guess.
I grew up around deer, and I’ve seen them survive with only 3 legs (usually missing part of the leg). Since it was upright and moving there was probably a better chance of survival if it had been in it’s own environment. : (
3 leg survival surprises me—I’m happy they can do that—this one prob had internal injuries from the truck too
Probably ran into all that scaffolding.
It was severely injured because somebody hit it with their car on the Westside Highway. There was a Citizen app alert about it.
Oddly enough, yesterday evening a full antler was discovered in the bushes on Riverside Drive between 102 and 103. We discussed it because we had never seen deer around here. I doubt this is related, but it was sure strange.
Very sad to see a deer in pain. Some of these comments are far from funny. What’s wrong with some people.
“humanely euthanized” is redundant. Euthanize literally means a humane death.
That was only Gary Larson
