The West 72nd Street Block Association is holding its third annual spring Community Building Day on Sunday, May 18, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

A welcome table will be set up in Verdi Square, at the north side of West 72nd Street, in front of the subway pavilion and to the right of the entry doors.

Volunteers are needed to help clean, mulch, and plant native plants and flowers in the tree beds along West 72nd Street. This event is held twice a year; in the fall block-association members and volunteers plant daffodil bulbs in the tree beds.

There will be presentations from local experts about how to prune and tend sidewalk tree beds, and how to apply fresh compost, plant, and mulch the tree beds. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gardening gloves, garbage bags, garbage picker, and gardening tools, if available.

Lots of trash to be collected before the plants go in..

Partnership for Parks, a public-private partnership between City Parks Foundation and the New York City Parks Department, will provide the plants, mulch, and additional planting tools. The event is also supported by the Broadway Mall Association, the nonprofit that helps plant and care for flowers and grass in the medians on Broadway.

Community Building Day is open to everyone, including families with children of all ages. Volunteers are welcome to show up the day of the event, but can also RSVP in advance by email to: w72streetblockassociation@gmail.com

No mention of the free pizza from two boots after? They’re calling volunteers at 10am and after, at noon a pizza party.

Every neighborhood should do this. In fact, why aren’t building owners responsible for all property from their building to the curb like in the suburbs? They should clean and maintain the sidewalks as well as the trees and planters.

they are actually:
“Property owners must clean and sweep the sidewalk and gutters next to their properties and the area extending 18 inches into the street from the curb. This rule applies even if someone else caused the dirty condition.”

With the insane amount of taxes small building owners in NYC pay to the city each year – NYC should maintain the sidewalks, and tree beds.

As a small building owner I am paying 130k+ a year in taxes and get almost nothing in return except the city finding new ways to add additional inspections, fees, fines, taxes and permits so we lose money every year.

Whats amazing is how people like this can do so much for the neighbirhood and yet others can then allow their dogs to urinate all over their hard work.

You are correct about this. I am a dog owner and never let my dog into the tree bed areas. People spend enough time cleaning and maintaining them and my dog shouldn’t ruin that.

Is the 72nd Street block association down with TransAlt? If not, I am happy to support them. If so, hard pass.

What does cleaning and mulching flower beds have to do with trans people and why do you even care if they help clean up the neighborhood?!

Yikes, really Richard? Do some research before posting next time.

So many abbreviations and acronyms are unfamiliar these days. Unless something is really familiar, like MTA, people should spell things out. I’ve lived on the Upper West Side for almost 50 years and have never heard of TransAlt before. But I have heard of Transportation Alternatives.

If your question is serious —
TransAlt is short for Transportation Alternatives, which lobbies for what it considers more desirable modes of transportation such as bicycles.
It has nothing to do with transgender rights.

A lovely group of volunteers on west 95th recently planted and mulched the bike lane tree beds on Amsterdam. Apparently it’s a constant struggle keeping trash and dogs out. Nice neighbors do something to beautify the block and others have no respect.

Can you clarify – is the Community Building Day the same day as the working on the tree beds day? Or is the Community Building Day intended to gather volunteers who will be called upon at some future date to improve the tree beds? It sound like they set up the booths at 10am on Sunday asking for volunteers to put on gloves and find spades and mulch to work on the beds from 10am to 1pm that day??
