
Dr. George Alexiades of NYU Langone Hospital in Long Island, will provide an update on cochlear implants, including advancements in technology, eligibility criteria for surgery, and the implantation process. He will be joined by Paul Lavra, a speech pathologist at NYU Langone Cochlear Implant Center in NYC, who will discuss aural rehabilitation for implant recipients.
Dr. Alexiades is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology at NYU Long Island School of Medicine/NYU Langone Long Island where he is Director of Otology/Neurotology/Skull Base Surgery. He completed his medical school training at NYU School of Medicine, then completed his residency training in Otolaryngology and fellowship training in Neurotology at NYU Medical Center.
He subsequently served as the Program Director at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, before becoming Director of the Cochlear Implant Center at Weill Cornell Medicine. He has performed hundreds of cochlear implantations over his career and has numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented at regional, national, and international meetings in the field otology/neurotology.

Paul Lavra, MS, CCC-SLP, TSSLD, is a speech-language pathologist specializing in adult and pediatric aural (re)habilitation, augmentative and alternative communication, and velopharyngeal insufficiency at NYU Langone’s Cochlear Implant Center. He received his master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology at Pennsylvania State University. He conducts evaluations to determine candidacy for cochlear implants or an auditory brainstem implant for individuals across the lifespan. He works with users of bilateral cochlear implants, bilateral hearing aids, bimodal listening devices, sequential bilateral cochlear implants, and single-sided deafness.
He works closely with implant recipients and their families to develop comfortable rehabilitative programming to address their unique needs and goals in order to maximize cochlear implant success. He also provides counseling regarding CI accessories, self-advocacy, and helpful communication strategies to recipients, spouses, partners, families, friends, co-workers, and care team.
