Last week, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that he will skip the Democratic primary in June and run as an Independent in his re-election bid. “Although I am still a Democrat, I am announcing that I will forgo the Democratic primary for mayor and appeal directly to all New Yorkers as an Independent candidate in the general election,” Adams said during a six-minute video about his decision.

Upper West Side News
By Gus Saltonstall

Celebrity sightings are not uncommon on the Upper West Side, but Harrison Ford waiting for the 1 train at the 72nd Street subway station would be enough to take anybody by surprise.

And that was exactly the case last week when Ford, 82, was spotted waiting for the train with his wife Calista Flockhart. To add to the Upper West Side connections, Flockhart, who is currently part of an off-Broadway show on West 42nd Street, was photographed earlier in the day with a Citarella bag.

Ford proceeded to take the 1 train to 59th Street/Columbus Circle, and, according to the New York Post, told a fellow passenger that it was the first time he had taken the subway in years.

Ford, who starred in “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones,” and “Bladerunner,” lives on a ranch in Wyoming, but previously lived on Central Park West between 70th and 71st streets.

Cherry blossom season has arrived once again on the Upper West Side.

Spring has sprung in New York City and the Central Park Conservancy has once again put together its Cherry Blossoms Tracker.

“There’s no better way to welcome spring than by stepping outside and soaking in the beauty of NYC’s cherry blossoms,” said NYC Parks Director of Tree Planting Navé Strauss, in a press release last week about the parks with the best cherry blossoms in the city.

The Central Park Conservancy recommends the following places in the park for best cherry blossom sightings.

  • West Side of the Reservoir
  • East Side of the Reservoir
  • Great Lawn
  • Cherry Hill
  • Pilgrim Hill
  • Sheep Meadow

The Riverside Park Conservancy also posted its own list of the best places to see its cherry blossoms, which includes the 72nd Street Waterfront, the park entrances between 79th and 83rd streets, and more. You can check out the full list — HERE.

The Parks Department recommends Sakura Park in Morningside Heights, near West 122nd Street and Riverside Drive, as the single best place in Manhattan to see cherry blossoms.

“Sakura means cherry blossom in Japanese, so what better place to experience cherry blossom season in New York City than at the park named for them!” the Parks Department wrote. “The cherry trees in this park were gifted from Japan in 1912. Dozens of Yoshino cherry trees blossom here, usually in early April.”

Returning to celebrities on the Upper West Side, Ellie Kemper, the star of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” is looking to sell her Central Park West apartment for $7.49 million, as first reported by the New York Post.

The apartment, at 320 Central Park West, near the corner of West 92nd Street, has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and views of Central Park. Kemper bought the apartment with her husband in 2021 for $7.84 million, which means the couple is all right with taking a small loss on the sale.

This is the second Upper West Side home that Kemper has sold in recent years, as she sold a neighborhood co-op in 2022 for $3.3 million.

You can read more and see photos of the newly listed apartment — HERE.

Calista Flockhart was in Curse of the Starving Class on W. 42nd St. Not Brooklyn. We saw Harrison Ford near Columbus Circle a week ago. And the play that same week.

Just a correction. The play that Calista Flockhart is in is on 42nd Street, not in Brooklyn. Thank you!

Harrison Ford is an old time Upper West Sider. He and his late ex-wife, the screenwriter Melissa Mathison (she wrote ET, among others), used to own several connected apartments at 101 Central Park West. High floor, incredible views of the park.

The Parks Department ran an excellent walking tour of the cherry blossoms in Central Park yesterday (Sunday, April 6). The hike was led by two genial and well-informed Park Rangers and was very well attended.

I had not known about the Parks Department’s tour programs (apparently scheduled and unscheduled). I was lucky to learn about this one from Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal’s newsletter. I’m grateful to her for the resource.

Worth looking into if you’re interested in Central Park!
