How many times have you found yourself scrolling through endless movie options on a streaming service only to give up in frustration, or worse yet, settle for something totally forgettable? You’re not alone.

Best Movies by Farr (BMBF) is the solution: a quality filter that helps discerning movie lovers find better movies, faster.

What Makes Us Different?

Unlike most streaming platforms, algorithms don’t power Best Movies by Farr— human curation does. Every film selected is researched and screened in advance by John Farr, a seasoned film advocate with decades of experience championing great cinema.

With an intuitive movie search tool and 3,300+ top titles to choose from, you can find the right film in seconds, not hours. Our database includes a range of outstanding films- new and old, narrative and documentary, domestic and international. For us, it’s not about “what’s out”, but “what’s great”- movies that matter and stand the test of time.

The Relaunch: An Even Quicker Path to the Best Movies

Best Movies by Farr relaunched this past December with a streamlined format that makes it even quicker and easier to find the next movie you’ll love. We tell you just what you need to know to make the right decision, including where the movie is streaming. In addition, timely, curated picks are now delivered directly to our subscribers each week. Paid membership offers film lovers unlimited access to our database of movie picks and articles, along with an ad-free browsing experience for premium subscribers.

About John Farr

John Farr, a New York City native, Upper West Side resident and Princeton graduate, started BMBF twenty years ago. Beyond the site, John has worked to revitalize landmark cinemas in the area, first helping restore the Avon Theatre Film Center in Stamford, Connecticut, and then founding the new, re-imagined Bedford Playhouse in Upper Westchester.

Our primary goal is to create a safe and respectful space where a broad spectrum of voices can be heard. We welcome diverse viewpoints and encourage readers to engage critically with one another’s ideas, but never at the expense of civility. Disagreement is expected—even encouraged—but it must be expressed with care and consideration. Comments that take cheap shots, escalate conflict, or veer into ideological warfare detract from the constructive spirit we aim to cultivate.
