Silver Stars Fitness: Learn How To Prevent & Ease Low Back Pain!

What a great way to bond by getting fit together.

On average 80 % of adults at some point in their life will suffer from low back pain.

I’m going to keep this article short and to the point, so let’s get in to it.

Although low back pain can happen at any age, certain conditions are more prevalent as we age.

Some of these unfortunate conditions that you may have been told that you have or have suffered from in the past are:

  • Spinal Stenosis: This is when the spinal canal narrows and sometimes because of this narrowing impinges a nerve, This is what we call sciatic pain.
  • Degenerative Disk or Disc Herniation: Degenerative disk occurs when the discs or shock absorbers between the vertebrae wear out. When these cushy disks that act as shock absorbers wear out, we lose the ability to move without pain. Disk herniation is when the outer layer of your disk cracks. The softer inner “ jelly” substance pushes through the crack and sometimes presses against your spinal nerve causing “sciatica”
  • Muscle Strains: Muscle strains are fairly common and occur if you lift something with faulty mechanics or you move in a way that your back is not prepared to do, you can then end up overstretching or tearing a muscle or connective tissue.

Other than age itself, some outside factors than can make you more prone to low back pain are:

  • Poor Posture
  • Sitting too much
  • Tight Hips & Hamstrings
  • Weak Core: Buttock, hips abs and low back
  • Lack of shoulder mobility

How To Manage Low Back Pain:

  • Rest from activities that cause pain such as high impact exercise, overhead lifting, bent- over activities, or abrupt twisting or turning.
  • Ice, heat over the counter medication
  • Massage, light stretching and slowly return to strengthening exercises to support your spine.
