UPDATE: Thursday, March 13 at 5 p.m.: A spokesperson for the NYPD provided the following statement to West side Rag on the recent slashings: “The commanding officers of the 20th Precinct and 24th Precinct are aware of multiple complaint reports that have been filed in recent weeks for criminal mischief involving slashed tires in the vicinity of Riverside Drive. The precincts have increased patrols in this area during the hours when the incidents have occurred. There are no arrests at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.”

The plague of tire slashings on the Upper West Side continues, with a vandal or vandals striking on West 95th Street some time on Wednesday. Multiple readers reached out on Wednesday to report that as many as eight cars had had their tires slashed on 95th between Columbus and Central Park West.
West Side Rag has previously reported on more than 10 car windows smashed at the end of February along Riverside Drive between West 96th and 104th streets, and then at least a dozen tire slashings along Riverside Drive on March 2 and additional ones on West 70th Street on March 6th.
The NYPD’s public information team has so far been unable to confirm that the department is investigating a pattern of tire slashings in the neighborhood. WSR reached out to the department again on Wednesday and will update this story with any further information.
Here are photos of some of the newly slashed tires found Wednesday on 95th Street between Columbus and Central Park West.

Really? Where’d you read that?
Agh the NJ slasher strikes again! NYPD is on the case, should be any day now… unless they just can’t be bothered?
UWS Dad, You must know people who hate cars, what are your thoughts?
This is a terrible crime, I’m calling for a TOTAL AND COMPLETE shutdown of government funded overnight parking until NYPD can find out what is going on.
We need to know what we did as a society to cause this. I’m a liberal, I hope D.A. Bragg isn’t very mean to the wayward person who did this.
While I in no way condone this or any other vandalism, and hopefully it’s just being done by one person who if we’re lucky will be caught soon, you are kidding yourself if you think that we can simply ignore the growing divide between the haves and the have nots, and assume we can make it all go away with a more empowered police force and further draconian punishment. If that’s the world you want to live in though, given what’s happening in DC, we’re all going to reap what is being sown soon enough, and my bet is that it won’t be pretty.
Weird that you seem to be justifying the tire slasher’s actions as some form of “social justice”.
Donny – please tell me which words I wrote that suggest that slashing tires is some form of social justice.
Right, we don’t want anyone to be sent to Rikers.
That’s a shame
Does this sort of thing happen in Singapore?
More importantly, does it happen in New Jersey?!
There is a community meeting with the police (24th precinct), next Wednesday, 6pm, at the Bloomingdale library. The commanding officer will be taking questions. If you are concerned, you should take an hour of your time to discuss this and any other issues you may have. They do this every 3rd Wednesday so they can address and remedy your concerns.
I wonder how many more tires will be slashed between now and next Wednesday. The way things are done here still baffles me.
Our car was slashed on 95th and west end. Seems like the whole block
Oh for crying out loud, put up some cameras. We have them to tag cars for red lights and speeding, how about cameras to catch criminals?
Running red lights and speeding are crimes, the people who run red lights and speed are criminals.
Ditto on that
Just discovered that my tire was slashed after parking last night on 90th St. (bet Bway and Amsterdam). Sigh.
Why does this keep happening? Where are the police, cameras, arrests? Obviously, these are gangs and repeat offenders.
It is so cruel to cause such upheaval in people’s lives. What was done to them to make them so angry?
It is cruel, but (and now I will make a social justice comment) I think you fail to understand what its like to be a have-not when almost all readers (I suspect) in our community on West Side Rag are haves. Not an excuse, but not a surprise that people lash out when:
– they have had a lousy education
– their job prospects are not promising
– their housing options are terrible
– they’ve had terrible interactions with the police when they’ve done nothing wrong
Its true that many people are able to rise above all that and do wonderful things with their lives, but I think we’re kidding ourselves that things like tire slashing and other “petty crimes” ought not grow when we have a ridiculous tax code (and a ridiculous administration in DC) that is only going to exacerbate the disparities of wealth, social support and opportunities among us.
What can they gain by slashing tires they would be more efficient if they were thieves!!!
You are not much for individual responsibility, are you? I love how you actually blame President Trump.
This is all Trump’s fault. If Kamala was president this would not be happening.
Give me a break, I hope you’re joking.
I never see police cars simply patrolling neighborhoods. It’s seems like random police patrols would be a deterrent to exactly this type of crime.
Random patrolling won’t do a thing. The chances of witnessing tire slashing on a random patrol are minimal. Cameras should be installed every block on Riverside.
Vote Republican already.
Haha the NYPD’s public information team has so far been unable to confirm if the NYPD is investigating. What a fantastic sentence.
Are the slashers possibly… ” Illegal criminal immigrants” !? Or are they referring to our own criminals nutters! Gotta put a load of cameras up all over the city it seems!! then perhaps the police will have time to come and arrest some of them!?? Onwards and upwards New Yawk!
The cause of this is simple: our progressive representatives do not care one bit about crime.
Brewer, Rosenthal, and the rest. They’re more concerned about serving organic food at Rikers (not a joke- Brewer said this) than they are about crime victims.
The current city administration seems to be doing a pretty good job of controlling crime https://nypost.com/2025/03/03/us-news/nyc-shootings-fall-to-30-year-record-low-as-crime-drops-citywide-nypd-data-shows/
A bunch of cars were slashed on W67th Street the other night as well. They have the guy on camera. The individual is known to those in the immediate neighborhood. A lone individual who often loiters, speaking loudly and incoherently. Can’t speak of the other incidents.
It would be great if the WSR would publish the images of the guy from that camera. Probably someone many of us will recognize.
So call the local precinct and asked to speak to the detective squad.
Find out who is working on this case, ….give him/her a video!
What are you waiting for Christmas?
It’s interesting that the white car in the 2nd photo has numerous tickets on its windshield…..
Since I studied Scientific Methods and Techniques to the Investigation of Crime at “John J” I know this guy’s MO.
You’re dealing with a guy that’s really upset because every time he comes home or comes to work there’s no space available to park his car.
He could be a doorman or he could be a superintendent or he could be a deli owner/worker or he could be your neighbor!
His motive is to park his car between 3 and 6 AM “without waiting for a good space where he doesn’t have to move his car on alternate side parking days.”.
So he figures if he slashes a few car tires, people would be nervous to park in that area again because they can become a victim by this mentally disturbed character.
This is nothing new. This has been done before on the Upper West Side on Riverside Drive in the 80s and 90s back in the 1970s and 1980s.. don’t remember if they found the person, but it did go away, until now…
This is the kind of “guy” that is very upset and mad that he is confronted by this every morning and he is sick and tired of it and has been planning something like this for a while now in his head ….”how to take care of this every day problem in his life”.
$10 that it’s none of those things, and some of your studies were wasted (sorry). My bet is that’s a disturbed individual with nothing better to do, or one of the shady, often teenage characters roaming the parks looking for victims. In either case, not a car owner looking for space.
You called it! Exactly what I have been thinking…. excellent job and you should be working for the 20Th Precinct.
I thought you were only not supposed to park on Riverside drive.
NYC sheeple keep voting Democrat. Wake up this is just the beginning.
Let’s get rid of private vehicles in the city. Open up more of the street to bicyclists and pedestrians. The air quality will improve dramatically- and soooo much less sound pollution!
We already have enough chaotic bike lanes that have resulted in the congestion we see every day.
Perhaps you should consider going to live in a more socialist place like Denmark where you can ride your bike and live happily ever after
You must really miss Covid, telling people what to do is cool.
The cops put 2 parking tickets on a vandalized car?? Adding insult to injury.
Insult to injury: you get your tires slashed and then the meter maid gives you a ticket because you can’t move your car.
They caught him!
