Text and Photographs by Jeff French Segall
The afternoon of February 5th provided any birder or bird photographer ample opportunities for the sighting of a variety of subjects. Alongside the nearly submerged wall connecting the northern and southern pumping stations, one could see mostly gulls.
At the southern end, however, in the ever-present spray of the Reservoir fountain, a variety of the ducks swam back and forth, occasionally in couples. From wood ducks to mallards to coots, buffleheads, and northern shovelers, I found myself taking over 500 photos of them.
The following set provides a small sample of what I saw that cold but clear afternoon.

I take some too.
Mallards ROOL!
Thanks, when I see that the birds have returned from the south; my winter blues recede. Amazing what nature does to our spirits!
Lovely. The Turtle Pond near The Great Lawn & Belvedere Castle has great bird life too.
