On December 17 from 6:00-7:30 p.m., the NYC Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America will present Russ Palmer, Ph.D., a deaf/blind folk singer/guitar player. He will speak about his musical journey from using hearing aids to cochlear implants. As part of his presentation, we will be treated to excerpts from his recently released EP/CD, Loving Touch. When not performing, Dr. Palmer is an international music therapist and vibroacoustic therapy practitioner. For many years he has been involved in academic projects within the EU, in Finland, and in the UK. His research interests include CI-based music perception with a focus on the vibrosensoric experience.
Dr. Palmer was born severely deaf. At 21 he was diagnosed with Usher syndrome which also caused him to go blind. At age 30, after a career as a computer analyst and programmer, he studied music at the Dartington College of Arts in the United Kingdom. This was followed by a year in Norway working with teachers of clients with special needs on how we feel music through our bodies. His studies at the Sibelius academy in Helsinki, Finland qualified him as a music therapist. In 2024, he earned his Ph. D. from the Faculty of Education and Psychology at the University of Oulu, Finland. In addition, he is a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society.
